Shooting victim's husband says police detained him for hours

A man who survived the shooting that killed his wife at a Georgia massage business last week said police held him in handcuffs for four hours after the attack. Mario Gonzalez told Spanish-language news website Mundo Hispanico in a video interview that he heard the gunshots and worried about his wife, who was in a separate room. Cherokee County sheriff's deputies arrived minutes later. The website says deputies detained him in handcuffs for about four hours outside the spa. Gonzalez questions whether they treated him badly because he's Mexican. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Monday.

Existing US home sales fell in February, while prices rose

Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes slowed last month as rising prices and a dearth of homes for sale kept some would-be buyers on the sidelines. The National Association of Realtors said Monday that existing homes sales in February fell…

Big upset day in NCAAs: Has the mid-major revolution begun?

Four upsets in eight second-round games at the NCAA Tournament may be a sign the mid-major revolution is on. Or maybe not. It's too soon to draw conclusions, but there's few who doubt the little guys had a good day Sunday and four more mid-majors will pick up the banner in games Monday. No. 11 seed Loyola and No. 15 Oral Roberts are headed to the Sweet 16 after stunning top-seeded Illinois and seventh-seeded Florida, and neither cares much for the Cinderella label. Says Oral Roberts coach Paul Mills, “We are not capitulating to anybody here.”

Tool created to aid cleanup from Microsoft hack in broad use

A tool designed to help businesses protect themselves from further compromises after a global hack of Microsoft email server software has been downloaded more than 25,000 times since it was released last week. That's according to the White House’s National Security Council. As a result, the number of vulnerable systems has fallen by 45%. The one-click Microsoft tool was created to protect against cyberattacks and to scan systems for compromises and fix them. The tool was developed after a massive hack affecting an estimated tens of thousands of users of servers running Microsoft’s Exchange email program.

Bill to aid US publishers vs. Google, Facebook rises again

Legislation that aims to bolster U.S. news organizations in negotiations with tech companies has supporters hoping that third time's the charm. The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act was introduced in March for the third time since 2018. It would offer publishers a four-year exemption from antitrust law so they can negotiate as a group with Facebook and Google. Australia and other countries have started pushing their mechanisms to support news publishers against the tech giants that dominate online advertising. Publishers argue they also squeeze news organizations out of digital ad revenue and exert undue control over who can see their journalism.

“Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York,” by Alexander Nemerov (Penguin Press) There are doorstop biographies, and then there are appreciations. Alexander Nemerov has taken the latter approach in “Fierce Poise,” his vibrant, sympathetic portrait of Helen Frankenthaler. It…

Volunteers from abroad ruled out for Tokyo Olympics

Volunteers from abroad will not be allowed into Japan for the postponed Tokyo Olympics when they open in four months. The announcement comes two days after Tokyo organizers said they would ban international fans from coming into Japan. A limited number of volunteers might be allowed to enter if they have special skills. Olympic organizers had planned to use about 80,000 unpaid volunteers. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government had lined up 30,000 more. Most are from Japan. It's not clear how many will be used this time.

DISPATCH: When home burns, and your job is to cover it

The redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains had not burned in decades. But they burned the year one data journalist lived there. Aug. 18, 2020 will forever be ingrained in the mind of the journalist who was displaced from her home by wildfire and tasked with covering the blaze that threatened her community. She rescued her pets from her home and then went to stay at a relative's house. Next, she got to work scouring social media and communicating with neighbors. She bonded with fellow evacuees to share their collective story. And, she took her experience with data to report on the human impact of the wildfire smoke.

10,000 and counting: The 'Point God' shows no signs of age

Chris Paul became the sixth player in NBA history to pass 10,000 career assists on Sunday night. The 35-year-old matched a feat that's only been done by John Stockton, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Mark Jackson and Magic Johnson. Paul earned his 10,000th assist when he threw a perfect alley-oop pass to Deandre Ayton for a dunk. Paul is still playing at a high level in his 16th season and made his 11th All-Star team earlier this year. He's averaging about 16 points and nine assists per game.

Freshmen show no signs of jitters in women's NCAA Tournament

Several freshmen showed no jitters on the opening day of the women’s NCAA Tournament. In fact, they embraced the bright lights of the Big Dance. It came as no surprise that Iowa’s Caitlin Clark began a run of impressive performances in the first game of the tournament. She was the nation's leading scorer during the regular season. There were others. Anaya Boyd averaged only eight minutes a game for Georgia Tech. She made major contributions down the stretch to help the Yellow Jackets avoid being upset in the first round.

Again, Syracuse makes Sweet 16 as double-digit seed

For the third time since 2016, Syracuse is headed to the Sweet 16 as a double-digit seed. In all, nine double-digit seeds have reached the regional semifinals in that time span — so the Orange have accounted for one third of them. Later on Sunday, 15th-seeded Oral Roberts and 12th-seeded Oregon State joined that list as well. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim once again made it past the first weekend after barely qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. The Orange edged third-seeded West Virginia after knocking off San Diego State in the first round.

Monday Fun Day: March Madness kicks off the week

It’s not like anyone’s going to the office anyway. The change in the March Madness schedule brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic will give basketball fans a first-of-its-kind experience -- eight games on a Monday. The second-round matchups will be played in Indianapolis, starting with a lunchtime (or coffee break) affair between Oregon and Iowa and concluding with a game between USC and Kansas that should wrap up after midnight in the east. The NCAA condensed the tournament schedule ever so slightly this year, packing 67 games into 19 days instead of the usual 21, as it brought all 68 teams to Indiana in an attempt to create a safe environment in which to play all the games.

Oregon State bounces Oklahoma State, Cunningham from NCAAs

Ethan Thompson scored 26 points and No. 12 seed Oregon State neutralized Oklahoma State and star freshman Cade Cunningham, rolling to an 80-70 upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Maurice Calloo, who transferred from Oklahoma State, scored 15 points and Jarod Lucas also had 15 for the Beavers, who advanced to play eighth-seeded Loyola Chicago in a Midwest Region Sweet 16 matchup that few could have predicted. Cunningham, a first-team All-American and possible top NBA draft pick, scored 24 points for Oklahoma State. But the fourth-seeded Cowboys wasted possessions down the stretch by failing to get him the ball.

Suns roll past LeBron-less Lakers for 111-94 win

Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton both had 26 points, Chris Paul had a triple-double with 11 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds and the Phoenix Suns beat the LeBron-less Los Angeles Lakers 111-94. The Lakers were playing without 17-time All-Star LeBron James for just the second time this season. They fell to 0-2 in his absence. James suffered a high ankle sprain in a 99-94 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday and is expected to miss significant time. Montrezl Harrell led the Lakers with 23 points. Phoenix has won 17 of its last 21 games.

Cyber attack tied to China boosts development bank's chief

A previously unreported cyberattack on the website of the Inter-American Development Bank is focusing attention on the role China plays in the multilateral lender. An internal IDB document reviewed by the AP claims that the September 2019 attack coincided with a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the bank and originated in more than 15,000 internet addresses throughout China. IDB President Mauricio Claver-Carone was an ardent critic of China when he served as the Trump administration's top national security official for Latin America. News of the attack is surfacing as Claver-Carone seeks to outmaneuver critics in Washington and beyond still fuming over his politically charged election last year that broke with tradition of a Latin American being at the helm of the bank.

No. 1 seed Baylor beats Wisconsin 76-63 to reach Sweet 16

Davion Mitchell scored 16 points and spearheaded a dominant defensive first half, helping top-seeded Baylor to a 76-63 win over Wisconsin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2021 bracket has been filled with surprises, the latest by lovable Loyola Chicago over Illinois. Not long after the Illini became the first No. 1 seed to bow out, the Bears looked every bit a Final Four favorite in the first half, smothering Wisconsin with the type of defensive pressure they played before a late-season COVID-19 pause.

Bueckers helps UConn rout High Point 102-59 in NCAA opener

Top-ranked UConn did just fine without coach Geno Auriemma as Paige Bueckers scored 24 points in a 102-59 win over women’s NCAA Tournament newcomer High Point in the first round. Auriemma is recovering from the coronavirus and missed the opener. Associated head coach Chris Dailey filled in for the Hall of Famer, who is also going to miss the second round game against Syracuse on Tuesday. Dailey has gone 11-0 filling in for Auriemma over their time together at UConn. The Huskies also were missing assistant coach Shea Ralph, who left San Antonio after one of her relatives contracted COVID-19.

Smith, Arkansas hold off Texas Tech 68-66 in NCAA 2nd round

Justin Smith had 20 points and played a key role in a final-play defensive stop, helping Arkansas beat Texas Tech 68-66 in the NCAA Tournament. That secured the program’s first trip to the Sweet 16 in a quarter-century. In the final seconds of a tense finish, Smith found himself defending Kyler Edwards beyond the 3-point arc. Edwards drove into the paint with Smith on his hip and missed a layup, with Arkansas grabbing the rebound and running out the clock. Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 20 points for the sixth-seeded Red Raiders.

Grimes helps No. 2 seed Houston rally past Rutgers, 63-60

Tramon Mark finished it off with soaring go-ahead tip-in that led to a three-point play with 24 seconds to go, leading the second-seeded seed Cougars on Sunday night into the Sweet 16. The game ended when Ron Harper Jr. missed a potential tying 3-pointer for the Scarlet Knights. Houston will play No. 11 seed Syracuse for a spot in the Midwest Region finals.
