AP interview: EPA head committed to 'scientific integrity'

The new head of the Environmental Protection Agency is taking steps to restore what he calls “scientific integrity” at the EPA. And one way Michael Regan is trying to do that is by reversing Trump administration actions that sidelined many academic scientists as advisers in favor of industry figures. Regan says in an Associated Press interview that the “reset” of two advisory panels will return the EPA to its time-honored practice of relying on advice from a balanced group of experts. Regan says “scientific integrity is a foundational value for EPA.” And he says he's is committed "to ensuring that every single decision we make meets rigorous scientific standards.’’

EXPLAINER: What we know about AstraZeneca blood clot reports

German officials have decided to limit the use of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine in people under 60 after more unusual blood clots were reported in a small number of people who received the shots. Earlier this month, more than a dozen countries, including Germany, suspended their use of AstraZeneca over the blood clot issue. After Europe’s drug regulator said the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks, most restarted, though some imposed the kinds of restrictions Germany has. The seesawing back and forth on who can take the vaccine has raised concerns that its credibility could be permanently damaged.

Ball in their court: Justices take on NCAA restrictions

With the March Madness basketball tournament ongoing, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case about how colleges can reward athletes who play Division I basketball and football. The NCAA says if the former college students who brought the case win, it could erase the distinction between professional and college sports. Under current NCAA rules, students can’t be paid, and the scholarship money colleges can offer is capped at the cost of attending the school. The NCAA defends its rules as necessary to preserving the amateur nature of college sports. Wednesday's Supreme Court hearing likely will result in a decision by summer.

Final Four set, a question left: Can anybody beat Gonzaga?

Gonzaga is so easy on the eyes when attacking that it's easy to overlook how fast they got the ball back. So when someone asked coach Mark Few about their defense before an Elite Eight matchup against USC, he jumped at the chance. Few lauded their “off-the-chart performances” and “terrific halves” in the less-glamorous side of the game. A day later, his defense dropped an anvil on the Trojans to make the Final Four. Michigan, the bracket’s other No. 1 seed, played decent defense against everyone in a UCLA jersey, except Johnny Juzang, and man, did he make them pay.

Analysis: More games, more money, more flexibility for NFL

There was never any doubt the NFL would grow its regular-season schedule to 17 games once the labor agreement with the players union was reached a year ago. More games, more money and more flexibility for America’s most popular sport. Here we are with the preseason reduced to three games, except for the teams in the Hall of Fame game. And the regular season kicking off on Sept. 9 and ending exactly four months later. And here we are with plenty of winners.

Beyond the pandemic: London tourism braces for slow recovery

The pandemic has dealt a blow to London’s tourism industry, which employs one in seven of the capital’s workers. After enduring three national lockdowns, attractions and hospitality businesses in London are making tentative plans to reopen from mid-May. But deep uncertainty about the coronavirus remains. With quarantine requirements and travel restrictions still in place everywhere and Europe battling a new surge of infections, many are bracing for another bleak year. Industry experts are confident tourists will return eventually, but a big question mark is whether business travel will ever be the same again.

Gonzaga's bid for a perfect season moves on to Final Four

Gonzaga’s countdown to perfection has ticked to two. The Bulldogs are back in the Final Four, two wins from becoming the first undefeated team since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers. UCLA is an 11, but it's also the all-time leaders in national championships. There also will be a trip down Southwest Conference memory lane on the Texas side of the bracket.
