Chauvin sentencing in Floyd death pushed back to June 25

Sentencing for former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin in George Floyd’s death has been pushed back to June 25, according to online court records. Chauvin’s June 16 hearing was reset by Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill due to a scheduling conflict. Chauvin was convicted April 20 of all three counts against him: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Under Minnesota statutes he’ll only be sentenced on the most serious one — second-degree murder. While that count carries a maximum sentence of 40 years, experts say he won’t get that much.

Hello, Cleveland: NFL takes 'blended' draft back on road

This year's NFL draft will be unlike any other. After last year's event in Las Vegas was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the league went all virtual. It's back on the road — this time in Cleveland -- with a three-day event that signals a step back toward normalcy in American sports. The draft will be the first major outdoor event since the virus altered lives in 2020. Commissioner Roger Goodell will once again welcome draft picks with hearty hugs and he'll hear some boos from masked fans in front of a large stage erected by the league near FirstEnergy Stadium and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

DoorDash offers lower-priced delivery plans amid criticism

DoorDash is launching lower-priced delivery options for U.S. restaurants, responding to criticism that the commissions it charges are too high for the beleaguered industry. The San Francisco-based delivery company says it will offer a new basic plan which will charge restaurants 15% per order for delivery, or around half the cost of previous plans. Restaurants can pay commissions of 25% or 30% for other plans if they want  more visibility in DoorDash’s app or lower customer delivery fees. DoorDash says it developed the plan over the last year after restaurants asked for more options.

Column: Will draft make your team better? Don't bet on it.

The NFL has embraced sports betting so fully that you almost expect Roger Goodell to open the NFL draft by placing an over/under bet on the number of cornerbacks drafted by the, yes, Las Vegas Raiders. Luckily, the commissioner is paid so handsomely he doesn’t need his ticket to cash. If betting a typical NFL game is hard _ and it is _ imagine trying to make a few bucks off a draft that experts have spent every waking hour analyzing for the last few months.

Israeli soccer referee comes out as transgender woman

An Israeli soccer referee has come out as transgender and is living — and enforcing the rules of the game — as a woman. Sapir Berman announced Tuesday that she has received the support of her family, the local referees’ union and Israeli and international soccer officials. She said even players and fans have begun to address her as a woman, even if they don’t always like her calls. Israeli society has a reputation for being gay friendly. Tel Aviv is host to one of the world’s largest gay pride parades each year. But some of Israel’s soccer powerhouses are located in communities where attitudes are more conservative.

Ford plans to develop and produce electric vehicle batteries

Ford wants to control the key technology for electric vehicles, so it plans to build a battery development center near Detroit by the end of next year. The company said the 200,000-square-foot facility will have equipment to design, test and even do small-scale manufacturing of battery cells and packs. The $185 million lab also will develop electronic controls and other items as Ford moves more of the process in-house. Eventually the company wants to do large-scale manufacturing of its own batteries globally, a task now performed by supply companies. The company wouldn't say the exact site of the center, nor would it say where it might build battery factories.

The cause is dear to the heart of Hernández, even though he grew up in Mexico as the scion of two generations of soccer greats. Chicharito knows what the sport did for him in his relatively privileged position, and he wants to share his passion with less-advantaged families.

Now as they begin planting the nation's dominant crops of corn and soybeans, they are seeing the strongest prices in years and a chance to put much of the recent stomach-churning uncertainty behind them. The return to something more akin to normal will be a welcome change from the last two seasons that likely will be remembered as among the most unusual in U.S. agricultural history. The USDA has forecast that agricultural exports will be strong this year, and coupled with greater demand for livestock feed and ethanol, corn prices have reached an eight-year high.
