Over 50 police injured, 250 detained in Berlin May Day riots

The German Police Union says more than 50 police officers have been injured and over 250 protesters have been detained after traditional May Day rallies in Berlin turned violent. More than 20 different rallies took place in the German capital on Saturday and the vast majority of them were peaceful. But a leftist march of 8,000 people through the city’s Neukoelln and Kreuzberg neighborhood, which has often seen clashes in past decades, turned violent late at night. Protesters threw bottles and rocks at officers, and burned garbage containers and wooden pallets in the streets.  German news agency dpa reported Sunday that Berlin’s deputy chief of the police union condemned the violence.

Kim wins Singapore LPGA tournament with final-round 64

Hyo Joo Kim shot a final-round 8-under 64 and then watched from the comfort of the clubhouse as Hannah Green bogeyed her final two holes to hand Kim a one-stroke victory in the LPGA’s HSBC Women’s World Championship. Kim sat in the dining room at Sentosa Golf Club and munched on some late afternoon snacks while watching Green take a one-stroke lead to the 17th. But Green three-putted the par-3 hole to leave Kim tied for the lead. Then the Australian bogeyed the 18th after she missed the green and a comeback putt for par after a poor chip. Kim finished with a 72-hole total of 17-under 271. Green’s 69 left her in second place.

Chinese university plan causes security concerns in Hungary

Hungary's government plans to host a Chinese university campus in its capital Budapest. But critics of the plan say the massive investment places an undue financial burden on Hungarian taxpayers and is indicative of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s increasing ties to autocracies in Moscow and Beijing. The $1.8 billion investment will be paid by Hungary with the help of a loan from a Chinese bank. Budapest's mayor says the project brings up national security concerns, since the university has pledged its loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party. The mayor of the Budapest district where the planned site is located says she will hold a local referendum to block construction of the campus.

Black candidate challenges political status quo in Spain

A Senegalese-born man running for a seat in Madrid's regional assembly this week wants to defy a history of underrepresentation of the Black community and other people of color in Spanish politics. Serigne Mbaye's candidacy has been met with a racist response from an increasingly influential far-right political party. One historian says the ascent of the far-right and the polarization in social media has normalized hate speech in Spain. Others say it has brought more attention to anti-racist voices. Still, quotas or other measures that would help address racial underrepresentation in Spanish politics or life are not even being debated.

LEADING OFF: Kluber goes for 100th win, NL rivalries simmer

Corey Kluber goes for his 100th career victory when he starts for the Yankees at home against Detroit. The 35-year-old Kluber is 99-60 in a big league career that started in 2011. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner has posted just three wins in the last three years with Cleveland, Texas and New York while beset by injuries. Kluber faces the worst-hitting team in the majors. The Tigers have a team batting average of just under .200 — former Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera went 0 for 5 on Saturday and fell to .125.

Republican Susan Wright makes US House runoff in Texas

A special election for a U.S. House seat in Texas is headed for a runoff. Republican Susan Wright secured one of the runoff spots Saturday night in Texas’ 6th Congressional District. But who she will face was too early to call. With nearly all votes counted, Republican Jake Ellzey led Democrat Jana Lynne Sanchez by 354 votes. Susan Wright is a GOP activist and is running to replace her late husband, Rep. Ron Wright. He died in February after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Indian court urges government action as hospitals cry help

With Indian hospitals struggling to secure a steady supply of oxygen, and more COVID-19 patients dying amid the shortages, a court in New Delhi says it would start punishing government officials for failing to deliver the life-saving items. On Sunday, India recorded a slight drop in new infections with 392,488 from a high of over 400,000 in the previous 24 hours, but experts believe it's an undercount. Twelve COVID-19 patients, including a doctor, on high-flow oxygen, died Saturday at a hospital in New Delhi after it ran out of the supply for 80 minutes. The Times of India newspaper says another 16 deaths in two hospitals in southern Andhra Pradesh state, and six in a Gurgaon hospital on the outskirts of New Delhi.

Actor Esmé Bianco says Marilyn Manson repeatedly abused her

“Game of Thrones” actor Esmé Bianco has sued Marilyn Manson alleging sexual, physical and emotional abuse. She filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles federal court Friday. Bianco alleges that Manson twice flew her to LA under false pretenses for projects that never materialized. The lawsuit says that he whipped her, threatened to rape her, cut her during sex without her consent and posted pictures of the cuts online. Manson's attorney says the allegations are false, and they will prove it in court. Bianco has said she is coming forward publicly in hopes others who have been abused speak out.

Jets go offense early before making run on defense in draft

The New York Jets’ offense was downright offensive on most Sundays the past few seasons. Joe Douglas went to work on changing all that pick by pick early in the NFL draft. The Jets went with offense on their first four selections and kicked things off by taking their newest franchise quarterback in BYU’s Zach Wilson at No. 2 overall. It marked the first time the Jets drafted offensive players with their first four picks since 1983. Douglas then took defensive players with the team’s final six picks.

Burns struggles to keep share of Tampa lead with Bradley

Sam Burns appeared to be sailing along Saturday in the Valspar Championship. Then came the reminder how quickly it all can change at Innisbrook. Burns had a three-shot lead with five holes to play. On the final hole, he had to make an 8-foot bogey putt just to stay tied for the lead. Burns shot a 69. Keegan Bradley also shot a 69. They were at 14-under par, tying the 54-hole tournament record. One shot behind them was Max Homa with a 66. Homa made two more putts longer than 25 feet, including a 35-footer on the last hole.

Medina Spirit gives Baffert record 7th Kentucky Derby win

Medina Spirit fought off three challengers in the stretch to win the Kentucky Derby, making Bob Baffert the winningest trainer in the race’s 147-year history with seven. Jockey John Velazquez earned his fourth Derby victory aboard the dark brown colt that was purchased as a yearling for $1,000 and cost current owner Amr Zedan $35,000. Baffert and Velazquez won back-to-back Derbies, having taken last year's edition with Authentic without spectators in the stands because of COVID-19.

With draft over, Niners now turn to preparing Lance for NFL

From the moment San Francisco made the decision to trade two future first-round picks to move up from No. 12 to 3 in the NFL draft, the pressure on the organization was immense. General manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan spent the next month debating one of the most consequential decisions in franchise history before settling on taking North Dakota State’s Trey Lance as the quarterback of the future. After spending the final two days of the draft adding players to help Lance on offense and some to add depth on defense, the 49ers can finally catch their breath.

SEC dominates NFL draft the way it manhandles college teams

As the NFL celebrated the conclusion of an in-person draft on the shores of Lake Erie that went swimmingly one year after a virtual event caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, one main fact emerged. For sure, the Southeastern Conference is the place to be for college football players. From 12 out of the SEC in the first round — six from national champion Alabama — to a total of 65 through the seven rounds that finished Saturday in Cleveland, the SEC dominated the selections the way it tends to dominate the college game.

Warren Buffett warns investors not to gamble on stocks

Billionaire Warren Buffett is warning people not to think investing is an easy way to make a fortune and gamble on the stock market. The billionaire answered questions at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting Saturday and said it can be tough to pick the long-term winners. He pointed out that in 1903 there were more than 2,000 car companies, and nearly all of them failed even though cars have transformed the country since then. Buffett's firm also reported a nearly $12 billion profit in the first quarter a year after a major loss when the value of its stock investments plummeted because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tebow-Meyer reunion? Jaguars still looking to fill TE hole

The Jacksonville Jaguars waited until the final day of the NFL draft to address the tight end position. They chose Ohio State’s Luke Farrell with the first pick in the fifth round Saturday. But he’s an unlikely answer to the team’s most glaring hole. That leaves the Jaguars in the market to make a move for a pass-catching tight end. No one would be surprised to see 33-year-old Tim Tebow end up signing with his hometown team. Tebow worked out for the Jaguars in February – as a tight end.

The Latest: Trainer Lukas pinch hits for 'Riders Up' command

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has stepped in to give the “Riders Up” command just before the Kentucky Derby as a last-minute substitute for originally scheduled local rapper Jack Harlow. No reason was immediately given for the quick change that put the four-time Derby winner in charge of the traditional call for jockeys to their mounts. But Lukas was ready. He delivered a clear, thorough command to the 19 riders gathered in the paddock for the premier race.

Taillon earns 1st win in exactly 2 years, Yanks beat Tigers

Jameson Taillon earned his first win in exactly two years, Aaron Judge had three hits and three RBIs, and the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4. Gleyber Torres also drove in three runs as the Yankees won for the sixth time in seven games and improved to 13-14. Taillon allowed one run, three hits and struck out eight over five innings. The Yankees had lost in each of his four previous starts. Taillon’s previous win came on May 1, 2019, for Pittsburgh in his last outing before having Tommy John surgery. The Pirates traded him to the Yankees before this season.

King to kingmaker: Liverpool can seal EPL title for Man City

Liverpool will like nothing more than to officially hand over its title as English Premier League champion to Manchester City on Sunday. City moved to the brink of reclaiming the league crown by beating Crystal Palace 2-0. One more win will complete the job for Pep Guardiola’s players. That's unless Liverpool does it for them with a victory at second-place Manchester United, the only team that can mathematically stop City. Liverpool heads to Old Trafford desperate for a win to keep alive its bid to qualify for next season's Champions League. Chelsea occupies the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot and is seven points ahead of Liverpool after a 2-0 win over Fulham.

Palou on pole for IndyCar at Texas after qualifying canceled

Alex Palou and Will Power will start on the front row for the IndyCar Series' first oval race this season. The field for Saturday night's race at Texas was set by championship entrant points after qualifying was canceled. The series did get in the scheduled practice session before two races over consecutive days at the 1 1/2-mile, high-banked oval. Overnight rain and morning mist delayed the practice because of a damp track. The start of Saturday night's 318-mile race was moved up about a half hour because rain chances are forecast to increase later in the evening. A 372-mile race is set for Sunday.

Missouri latest state to thwart voter-approved policies

The Missouri Legislature is the latest statehouse fighting to undo voter-backed ballot measures. Missouri's GOP-led Senate this past week voted against paying for voter-approved Medicaid expansion. The battle between Missouri lawmakers and voters is just one example of pushback to direct democracy. The purpose of ballot initiatives is to let voters address issues that lawmakers don't act on. Direct democracy expert Craig Burnett says by definition, voter-driven policies clash with what lawmakers want to do. Legislatures in response often try to claw power back and overturn ballot initiatives. South Dakota, Utah, Montana, Arizona and Florida are all states where lawmakers recently sought to undermine voter-approved measures.

76,000 California inmates now eligible for earlier releases

California is giving 76,000 inmates the opportunity to leave prison earlier. They include violent and repeat felons. The move comes as the state aims to further trim the population of what once was the nation’s largest state correctional system. More than 63,000 inmates convicted of violent crimes will be eligible for good behavior credits that shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the previous one-fifth under new rules that take effect Saturday. About 13,000 inmates convicted of serious but nonviolent offenses will be eligible for release after serving half their sentences.

Booms in Idaho, Utah buck the curve of slowing US growth

Two Western states known for rugged landscapes and wide-open spaces are bucking the trend of sluggish U.S. population growth, which dipped to the lowest level since the Great Depression. In Utah, births largely drove what has been the fastest growth in the country over the past decade. In neighboring Idaho, newcomers from California and other states helped it capture the second spot. Both states have long been lightly populated. Their expansion comes with breakneck economic growth that has driven housing prices far above wages and sparked concern about strains on infrastructure.
