Dubai luxury home market soars as world's rich flee pandemic

Foreign buyers flush with cash have flooded the high-end property market in Dubai even as vaccines roll out unevenly across the world and waves of infections force countries to extend restrictions. It's one of the few places in the world where they can dine, shop and do business in person. The ultra-wealthy are snapping up record numbers of luxury villas and penthouses, sending prices rocketing in this boom-and-bust market. Sales soared 230% in the first quarter of 2021, compared to the same time last year. It's unclear how long the frenzy will last but the craze reveals how Dubai’s vision for the post-pandemic high life has lured the world’s ultra-rich.

Caitlyn Jenner to critics: 'I move on' she says in interview

Caitlyn Jenner's Republican campaign for California governor has elicited angry reaction from some members of the LGBTQ community. But she says “I move on” when it comes to her critics. Her comment came during a one-on-one interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, which marked some of the first words in public since announcing her candidacy about two weeks ago. Jenner also endorses the border wall that was a signature project for former President Donald Trump. The 71-year-old Jenner is a reality TV personality and Olympic hero who came out as a transgender woman in 2015.

On the ground and afar, diaspora boosts India's virus fight

India’s large diaspora is tapping its wealth, growing political clout and expertise to help India combat a catastrophic coronavirus surge that has led to desperate pleas for oxygen and left people to die outside overwhelmed hospitals. Two humanitarian groups in the U.S. led by people of Indian descent raised more than $25 million in recent days to help India’s teetering health care system. In Britain, volunteers at three Hindu temples raised more than $830,000 last weekend by racking up miles on stationary bikes. The magnitude of the response reflects the deep pockets of many people in the overseas Indian community as well as their deep ties to India.

Republicans promote pandemic relief they voted against

Every Republican in Congress voted against the $1.9 trillion "American Rescue Plan," which President Joe Biden signed into law three months ago. But ever since, Republicans from New York and Indiana to Texas and Washington state have promoted elements of legislation that would not exist if they had their way. The Republicans have been particularly bullish on promoting the rescue plan’s “Restaurant Revitalization Fund,” which devoted $28.6 billion to the struggling industry. Applications for the program opened this week. Democrats are promising to make the pandemic relief vote — and the apparent Republican hypocrisy — a central element in next year’s midterm elections.

Biden hits schools goal even as many students learn remotely

President Joe Biden has met his goal of having most elementary and middle schools open for full, in-person learning in his first 100 days. The Education Department has released survey data finding that 54% of public schools below high school offered full-time classroom learning in March. But even with that milestone, most students continued to learn at least partly away from school. The survey found that almost 4 in 10 students continued to take all classes remotely, and 2 in 10 were split between classroom and remote learning. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona applauded the progress but also raised concerns about racial disparities.

EXPLAINER: No evidence '3/5 compromise' aimed to end slavery

Republican lawmakers in recent days have given new voice to a claim that’s surfaced and been debunked before, that the clause in the Constitution counting slaves as three-fifths of a person actually was a step toward ending slavery. The most recent example came from Tennessee state Rep. Justin Lafferty, amid a debate over whether educators should be restricted while teaching about systemic racism in America. His remarks sparked applause from the GOP-controlled House while shocking many Black lawmakers and activists. Scholars interviewed by The Associated Press on Wednesday said there is no evidence the constitutional provision was intended to end slavery.

Google says 20% of workers will be remote, many more hybrid

Google says that it expects about 20% of its workforce to still work remotely after the pandemic. In addition, some 60% will work a hybrid schedule that includes about three days in the office and two days wherever the employees work best. The announcement Wednesday relaxes a stricter stance the company had taken earlier. For up to 20 days per year, Google employees will also be able to work from any location other than their main office. This has been increased from a previous allotment of 10 days. Most of Google’s 135,000 employees can continue to work from home through September of this year.

Capela, Hawks pull away late to take 135-103 win over Suns

Clint Capela scored 18 points to lead seven scorers in double figures and the Atlanta Hawks pulled away late to overcome Devin Booker’s 30 points and beat the Phoenix Suns 135-103. The Suns began the night even with the Utah Jazz in the race for the NBA’s best record, thanks to a five-game winning streak. Phoenix faded badly in the fourth quarter of the back-to-back following Tuesday night’s 134-118 overtime win at Cleveland. Atlanta outscored Phoenix 38-15 in the fourth period. Mikal Bridges, who had 18 points, was the Suns’ only other scorer in double figures. Trae Young had 16 points and 12 assists for Atlanta.

Four people killed when plane crashes into Mississippi home

Authorities say a small plane carrying three people to a university graduation crashed into a house in Mississippi, killing an occupant of the home and three Texas residents. The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday that an investigator was on the way to the scene in Hattiesburg. Authorities say the plane plunged into the home late Tuesday, starting a fire. Two adults and a toddler from Wichita Falls, Texas, were aboard the plane.  Authorities say the aircraft had left Wichita Falls and was preparing to land at the Hattiesburg airport when it crashed late Tuesday night.

New York Rangers abruptly dump team president, GM

The New York Rangers say president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton are out. The move comes less than 24 hours after the team criticized the NHL for not suspending Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson and saying George Parros was unfit to remain as head of player safety. It was not immediately clear if the front-office shakeup had any connection to the statement. Chris Drury is now the president and GM of the storied NHL team.
