Met Opera stagehands to return to work after lockout

Stagehands at the Metropolitan Opera planned to return to work Wednesday after recommending their union ratify a new labor contract negotiated following a lockout that started last year. Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees said its full membership will vote July 18 on the agreement that was reached last weekend. The Met reached an agreement in May with the American Guild of Musical Artists, which represents the chorus. Its contract with Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, which represents the orchestra, expires July 31, and negotiations are ongoing.  

Regulator halts Iowa amusement ride after accident kills boy

A regulator has ordered an Iowa amusement park not to restart a popular water ride pending an investigation into a boat accident that killed an 11-year-old boy and left his brother in critical condition. Iowa Labor Commissioner Rod Roberts on Tuesday signed a cessation order that bars Adventureland Park from operating the Raging River until an investigation is complete and all hazards are corrected. Adventureland, based near Des Moines in Altoona, voluntarily stopped operating the ride after Saturday night’s accident in which a boat carrying six members of a family flipped over. Michael Jaramillo died Sunday from his injuries, and ABC’s “Good Morning America” reported Tuesday that one of his brothers remains hospitalized in a medically induced coma.

All Universal films coming to Peacock starting in 2022

The streaming service Peacock is ramping up its offerings with a new deal with Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. The companies said Tuesday that starting in 2022 all Universal films, including the new “Jurassic World,” Jordan Peele-led and “Minions” movies, will become available exclusively on Peacock no later than four months after their theatrical premieres. The unique multi-year deal guarantees that in an 18-month window, Universal films will be available on Peacock for the first and last four months. The films can be licensed to other services in between. Universal’s 2022 slate incudes “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” and an original film from Peele.   

Evanescence, Halestorm double up on rock riffs for new tour

Grammy-winning rock bands Evanescence and Halestorm are sharing stages this fall with a new tour that will bring a double dose of heavy rock riffs. Singers Amy Lee of Evanescence and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm have been friends since their first tour together in 2012, bonding over their shared love of karaoke bars. Evanescence released a new album this year, “The Bitter Truth," the band's first record of original material in a decade. Halestorm has also been using the downtime because of the pandemic to work in the studio on new music. Lee said not only do their fan bases fit well together, their voices are “equally matched" and they promised special collaborations on the road. 

'Superman,’ 'Lethal Weapon’ director Richard Donner dies

The filmmaker who turned Christopher Reeve into “Superman” and Mel Gibson and Danny Glover into cop buddies in “Lethal Weapon” has died, his family said Monday through a spokesperson. Richard Donner was 91. Donner’s other credits include “The Goonies,” “Scrooged” and the “Lethal Weapon” franchise. Donner was never nominated for an Oscar, but he got a chance to thank the academy when it held a tribute in his honor in 2017. Donner is survived by his wife and production partner, Lauren Shuler Donner. In 1993, they founded The Donners Company, which has produced such hits as “Deadpool,” “The Wolverine” and the “X-Men” franchise. 

Bruce Springsteen's daughter makes Olympic equestrian team

The daughter of rock icon Bruce Springsteen and singer-songwriter Patti Scialfa has been selected as one of four riders on the U.S. jumping team that will compete at the Tokyo Olympics. Twenty-nine-year-old Jessica Springsteen is making her Olympic debut. She has said being selected would fulfill a lifelong dream. Springsteen will team with Kent Farrington, Laura Kraut and McLain Ward when the equestrian competition begins Aug. 3. Springsteen is ranked third behind Kraut and Ward and will be riding 12-year-old stallion Don Juan van de Donkhoeve. U.S. Equestrian announced the selections Monday.

Peabody Essex Museum to expand hours, hold vaccine clinics

The Peabody Essex Museum is offering vaccination clinics and expanding its hours as the coronavirus pandemic eases in Massachusetts. Museum officials announced Tuesday that the new expanded hours kick off on Friday, when the Salem museum holds the first of several vaccination clinics. The clinics, in partnership with Curative, will offer Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson shots at no cost on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. through Aug. 13. Visitors who get a shot also get free admission and will be entered into the state’s vaccine lottery with a chance to win either $1 million or a $300,000 college scholarship.
