Final parade: Ex-Gov. Edwards carried to funeral site

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards told mourners at the funeral of former Gov. Edwin Edwards that the late governor left his mark on every part of the state during four terms. The flag-draped casekt of Edwin Edwards, who died last Monday at age 93, was carried by horse-drawn carriage from the current Capitol building to the Old State Capitol Sunday for a private service. In prepared remarks released Sunday afternoon, Gov. John Bel Edwards — no relation to the former governor — praised Edwin Edwards for numerous accomplishments, and for support of the state charity hospital system.

Out for a ride: Tadej Pogacar wins 2nd straight Tour title

Tadej Pogacar has won the Tour de France for a second straight year after a mostly ceremonial final stage to the Champs-Elysees in cycling’s biggest race. The Slovenian rider with UAE Team Emirates successfully defended his huge lead of 5 minutes, 20 seconds over second-place Jonas Vingegaard. The 22-year-old Pogacar won his first title last September when he became the Tour’s youngest champion in 116 years. He is now the youngest double winner of the race. 

Court blocks order lifting CDC virus rules on cruise ships

Pandemic restrictions on Florida-based cruise ships will remain in place after a federal appeals court temporarily blocked a previous ruling that sided with a Florida lawsuit challenging the regulations. The one-paragraph decision by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was filed at 11:50 p.m. Saturday, just minutes before a Tampa judge’s previous ruling on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention restrictions was to take effect. The judges’ issuance of a temporary stay keeps the CDC regulations regarding Florida-based cruise ships in place while the CDC appeals the Tampa judge's June decision. The Florida lawsuit claims the CDC’s multiple-step process to allow cruising from Florida is overly burdensome.

NYC honors essential workers at parade up Canyon of Heroes

The people who helped get New York City through the pandemic are being honored at a parade. City officials say the event Wednesday honors a range of people, including workers in health care, transportation, education and infrastructure. The parade kicked off at Battery Park and traveling up Broadway in lower Manhattan, the iconic stretch known as the Canyon of Heroes. Previous parades have honored world leaders, celebrities and winning sports teams. The parade’s grand marshal is Sandra Lindsay, a health care worker who was the first person in the country to get a COVID-19 vaccine shot.

Bill, Melinda Gates to run foundation jointly after divorce

Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates will continue to work together as co-chairs of their foundation even after their planned divorce. However, if after two years they cannot continue in their roles, French Gates will resign her positions as co-chair and trustee, The Bill and Gates Melinda Foundation announced Wednesday. If French Gates resigns, Gates would essentially buy her out of the foundation, one of the world’s largest private charitable organizations, and she would receive resources from him to do her own philanthropic work. The resources received would be separate from the foundation’s endowment, according to the announcement,

Cejka seeks 3rd major at US Senior Open; Els, Furyk in field

Alex Cejka has had no trouble adjusting to professional golf’s 50-and-over division. The PGA Tour Champions newcomer already has wins in two senior majors and will go for a third this week in the U.S. Senior Open at Omaha Country Club in Nebraska. The field includes 16 players who won a total of 26 majors before joining the senior tour. Among them in the Senior Open for the first time are Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Jose Maria Olazabal, Rich Beem and Mike Weir. Defending champion Steve Stricker is playing on the regular tour this week at the John Deere Classic.
