Son says Philip's death has left 'huge void' in queen's life

Prince Andrew says the death of Prince Philip has left a “huge void” in Queen Elizabeth II’s life. Andrew and other members of the royal family attended church on Sunday at the Royal Chapel of All Saints two days after the 99-year-old Philip died at Windsor Castle. The youngest of Philip and Elizabeth's four children, Prince Edward, called his father's death a “dreadful shock” but said the queen was “bearing up.” Well-wishers continued to leave floral tributes outside the gates of royal residences in memory of the monarch’s husband. Edward said the “extraordinary” tributes meant a lot to the royal family, while Andrew said Philip's death was almost like losing “the grandfather of the nation.”

Chloé Zhao becomes 1st woman of color to win top DGA honor

Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” continued its tour of dominance through awards season Saturday night, when Zhao took top honors at the 73rd annual Directors Guild Association Awards. She is only the second woman to earn the honor and the first woman of color to do so. And it all but solidifies her frontrunner status leading up to the Oscars on April 25. Only seven times in history has the DGA winner ever not gone on to take the best director prize at the Academy Awards. Other winners included Darius Marder for best first time feature for “Sound of Metal” and Gregory Kershaw and Michael Dweck for the documentary “The Truffle Hunters."

German president: Buchenwald a reminder of Nazi 'barbarism'

WEIMAR, Germany (AP) — Germany’s president on Sunday marked the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp by reminding his compatriots of the inconceivable atrocities the Nazis committed there during the Third Reich. “Communists and democrats, homosexuals…

Business faces tricky path navigating post-Trump politics

It’s been a long political union between corporate America and the Republican Party. But that bond is fraying. For decades the GOP and business have shared common ground, especially with their mutual belief in low taxes and the need to repeal regulations. But the relationship has come under increasing pressure as companies take cultural stands and other interests diverge. Fissures have opened over the GOP’s embrace of conspiracy theories and climate change denialism, as well as its rejection of the 2020 election outcome. And Republicans are furious about corporate criticism of the Republican-backed law in Georgia restricting voting rights.

Religious leaders recall Prince Philip's spiritual curiosity

Churches in Britain have held services to remember Prince Philip as people of many religions reflected on a man whose gruff exterior hid a personal faith and deep curiosity about others’ beliefs. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby led a service of remembrance at Canterbury Cathedral in southeast England on Sunday for the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died Friday at age 99. Welby led prayers for Philip and contemplated “a very long life, remarkably led.” Born into the Greek royal family, Philip was baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church. He became an Anglican when he married Elizabeth. A prominent British Sikh leader, said Philip “contributed to the understanding and harmony between differing faith communities.”

IMF: Vaccine inequity threatens Mideast's economic recovery

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Middle East economies are recovering from the coronavirus pandemic faster than anticipated, largely due to the acceleration of mass inoculation campaigns and an increase in oil prices. But the International Monetary Fund warned Sunday…

Official: Chinese vaccines' effectiveness low

In a rare admission of the weakness of Chinese coronavirus vaccines, the country’s top disease control official says their effectiveness is low and the government is considering mixing them to give them a boost. The director of the China Centers for Disease Control says Chinese vaccines don’t have very high protection rates. He spoke Saturday at a conference in the southwestern city of Chengdu. Beijing has distributed hundreds of millions of doses in other countries while also trying to promote doubt about the effectiveness of Western vaccines. The official says the government is formally considering whether to mix different vaccines.

Report: Hotel will house Olympic athletes with COVID-19

Athletes at the Tokyo Olympics who come down with minor symptoms of COVID-19 could be isolated in a hotel lined up by local organizers of the games, according to Japan's Kyodo news agency, which cited unnamed officials with “knowledge of the plan.” Kyodo said the organizers are working to secure 300 rooms in a hotel near the Athletes Village. It said the rooms would be for athletes and staff who do not need to be hospitalized. The measure underlines the risk of trying to hold the Olympics and Paralympics during a pandemic.

EU and COVID-19: When a vaccine only adds to the trouble

COVID-19 has wrought division in the European Union. Lofty hopes that the crisis would encourage a new and tighter bloc to face a common challenge have given way to the reality of division: The pandemic has set member nation against member nation, and many capitals against the EU itself, as symbolized by the disjointed, virtual meetings leaders now hold. Some of it is no different than fateful events that happened in other nations around the globe too. The EU and its countries, of course, fell victim to some events beyond their control, as other nations around the globe did. But some of the crisis was plainly self-inflicted.

LEADING OFF: Kershaw vs Scherzer as last 2 champs collide

A pair of three-time Cy Young Award winners square off when Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers face Max Scherzer and the Nationals in a marquee matchup between the past two World Series champions. Los Angeles is looking for a three-game sweep of its first home series this season, and Dodgers starters are 5-0 in their last seven outings. Also, the Braves go for their fifth straight victory and a series sweep of NL East rival Philadelphia. Plus, AL MVP José Abreu and the White Sox try to win their 18th consecutive game when facing a left-handed starter. That would tie the major league record. Chicago gets its chance against Mike Minor and the Royals.

Electrical problem strikes Iran's Natanz nuclear facility

A spokesman for Iran’s civilian nuclear program says an incident has struck the electrical distribution grid of the country’s Natanz nuclear facility. He made the comment Sunday, saying there were no injuries or pollution caused by the incident. The word state television used in its report in Farsi can be used for both accident and incident. It didn’t immediately clarify. A mysterious explosion in July damaged Natanz’s advanced centrifuge facility. Iran later called the incident sabotage. Israel, Iran’s regional archenemy, has been suspected of carrying out an attack there, as well as launching other assaults, as world powers negotiate with Tehran over its tattered nuclear deal.

Lakers pull away after ejections, rout Nets 126-101

Andre Drummond had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Dennis Schroder scored 19 points before he and Kyrie Irving were ejected in the third quarter and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Brooklyn Nets 126-101. A nationally televised matchup already missing plenty of star power lost even more when Irving started jawing with Schroder and neither player stopped quickly enough for the officials. The Lakers had led most of the way and were ahead 66-62 when Irving fouled Schroder with 9:41 left in the third. Los Angeles blew it open soon after the ejections with a 15-2 burst to open an 88-71 lead.

AP source: Electric vehicle battery firms settle trade spat

Two South Korean electric vehicle battery makers have settled a long-running trade dispute that will allow one of them to move ahead with plans to make batteries in Georgia. That's according to a person briefed on the matter. The person says LG Energy Solution and SK Innovation reached the settlement, ending the need for President Joe Biden to intervene. The companies have not yet announced the settlement, and no details are available. The U.S. International Trade Commission decided that SK stole 22 trade secrets from LG Energy, and that SK should be barred from importing, making or selling batteries in the U.S. for 10 years.

T-wolves owner: A-Rod, partner in agreement to buy NBA club

Former baseball star Alex Rodriguez and e-commerce mogul Marc Lore have signed a letter of intent to buy the Timberwolves and keep the NBA franchise in Minnesota. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor confirmed the agreement, which includes the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. The two sides have a 30-day window for negotiations to be finalized. Taylor plans to keep control of the club for the next two years and bring on Rodriguez and Lore as partners until a handover in 2023. The Athletic first reported the sale, which would be worth $1.5 billion.

US-Philippines officials discuss concerns over China's ships

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has discussed with his Philippine counterpart China’s recent positioning of “militia vessels” near the Philippines in the South China Sea. Austin spoke by phone Saturday with Philippine Secretary of National Defense Delfin Lorenzana while Austin was flying from Washington to Israel to begin an international trip. Pentagon press secretary John Kirby says Austin and Lorenzana discussed the situation in the South China Sea and the recent massing of Chinese vessels at Whitsun Reef, which has drawn criticism from Manila. China has said its vessels are there for fishing.

Rain wins again; Martinsville to have doubleheader Sunday

Rain forced the postponement of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway after just 42 laps Saturday night, setting up a doubleheader Sunday. The day will start at noon with the completion of an Xfinity Series race that was suspended after 91 laps Friday night. That race has 159 laps to complete, and the Cup completion will begin at 4 p.m. in conditions that weather forecasts suggest will be sunny and in the mid-70s. Denny Hamlin led all but four of the 42 laps before a light drizzle intensified.

Column: From 2006 in the world to the final round of Masters

Will Zalatoris was ranked 2,006th in the world just two years and Saturday he was in contention at the Masters. Some guys come by their cool honestly; he came by his playing against some of the best junior competition golf has to offer. But unlike Jordan Spieth or Scottie Scheffler, Zalatoris had to get into tournaments by playing Monday qualifiers on the Korn Ferry Tour, and win often enough to earn a spot against the best. He starts the final round at Augusta in second, four shots behind leader Hideki Matsuyama, but that kind of pressure is nothing new.

Coroner: 6th person dead following South Carolina shooting

A sixth person has died after a shooting earlier this week by a former NFL player who also killed four members of a South Carolina family. York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said Saturday that 38-year-old air conditioning technician Robert Shook had died from injuries in the Wednesday shooting while he was working at the home. Authorities say that Phillip Adams killed Rock Hill physician Robert Lesslie, his wife, two grandchildren and Shook and a fellow air conditioning technician working at the Lesslie home. Adams later shot himself to death.

Two Utah sheriff’s deputies were wounded and the suspect was killed in a shooting outside the Salt Lake County jail. Officials said both deputies were taken to a hospital after the Saturday morning shootout and are expected to survive. Their identities were not immediately available. Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said in a news conference that the two officers worked as part of campus security and were partners. Rivera says one of the deputies was shot in the eye and is in critical condition. The other deputy was grazed in the cheek by a bullet and is expected to be released from the hospital soon.

Xander Schauffele, again, right in major mix at Masters

Xander Schauffele is in what has become familiar territory. He’s close to the top of the leaderboard in a major championship. He’s hoping Sunday isn’t more of the same when it comes to finishes. Schauffele shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to get to 7 under through three rounds of the Masters, leaving him four shots back of Hideki Matsuyama going into the final round. He’s had five top-five finishes in majors, including a tie for second -- one shot behind winner Tiger Woods — at Augusta National in 2019. And now comes another chance for a major breakthrough.

LEADING OFF: Twins run into extra trouble, Chisox rake LHPs

The Twins have lost three times this season -- all of them in 10th inning with the automatic runner on second base. Seattle topped the Twins 4-3 in the 10th on Saturday, helped when Minnesota reliever Taylor Rogers couldn’t get a clean grip on a bunt. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli says small ball is making a big difference. Also, AL MVP José Abreu and the White Sox will try to win their 18th straight game facing a left-handed starter. That would tie the major league record set by Atlanta from 2004-05. The White Sox get their chance when they host lefty Mike Minor and the Royals.

The Latest: Matsuyama up by 4 going into Masters final round

The third round of the Masters is over, and Hideki Matsuyama has a four-shot lead over Xander Schauffele, Marc Leishman, Justin Rose and Will Zalatoris. Matsuyama becomes the first Japanese player in Masters history to lead after any round. Matsuyama shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to move to 11 under for the week.
