Will Smith film departs Georgia over voting restrictions

Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua have pulled production of their runaway slave drama “Emancipation” from Georgia over the state’s recently enacted law restricting voting access. The film is the largest and most high profile Hollywood production to depart the state since Georgia’s Republican-controlled state Legislature passed a law that introduced stiffer voter identification requirements for absentee balloting, limited drop boxes and gave the State Election Board new powers to intervene in county election offices and to remove and replace local election officials. Opponents have said the law is designed to reduce the impact of minority voters.

Russia: Feminist activist on trial on pornography charges

A Russian court has opened the trial of a feminist activist and artist charged with disseminating pornography after she shared artwork depicting female anatomy online — a case in line with the Kremlin’s conservative stance promoting “traditional family values.” Yulia Tsvetkova, from the far-eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, faces up to six years in prison on charges reportedly related to her group on the popular social network VKontakte where colorful, stylized drawings of vaginas were posted. The first hearing in the court on Monday comes a year and a half after Tsvetkova was first detained. Amnesty International last week called the case “Kafkaesque absurdity” and urged Russian authorities to drop all charges against the activist.

Daunte Wright death in Minnesota traffic stop sparks unrest

A Black man died after being shot by police in a Minneapolis suburb during a traffic stop and crashing his car several blocks away, sparking violent protests as officers in riot gear clashed with demonstrators and the man’s mother called for calm. The death of the man, identified by family as 20-year-old Daunte Wright, ignited protests in Brooklyn Center that lasted into the early hours Monday in a metropolitan area already on edge and midway through the trial of the first of four police officers charged in George Floyd’s death. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz tweeted he was praying for Wright’s family “as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement.” Daunte’s mother, Katie Wright, attempted to curb any unrest by calling for calm.

Chilly weather doesn't dampen UK joy at lockdown easing

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people to “behave responsibly” as shops, gyms, hairdressers, restaurant patios and beer gardens reopened after months of lockdown. Monday brought the easing of restrictions that had been in place in England since early January. They were imposed to suppress a surge in coronavirus infections linked to a more transmissible new variant first identified in the southeast of the country. Long lines formed outside some stores, including a branch of Nike Town in London’s busy Oxford Street, and pubs and restaurants with outdoor space reported a flood of bookings. The chief executive of the British Retail Consortium said businesses that have endured months of enforced closure were “excited and desperate” to welcome customers back.

EXPLAINER: Iran atomic sites targeted by diplomacy, sabotage

Iran’s nuclear program has been targeted by diplomatic efforts and sabotage attacks over the last decade, with the latest incident striking its underground Natanz facility. The attack Sunday at Natanz comes as world powers try to negotiate a return by Iran and the U.S. to Tehran's atomic accord. The sabotage threatens to upend those negotiations and further heighten regional tensions across the Mideast. It comes at a sensitive time for outgoing President Hassan Rouhani. He is term-limited from serving again. If Iran can’t regain the benefits of the deal, it could boost hard-liners within the Islamic Republic ahead of June's presidential election.
