Super Bowl champ Bucs focused on building depth in NFL draft

Jason Licht is enjoying the perks that come with being the general manager of a reigning Super Bowl champion. That includes the challenge of getting a late start on preparing for the NFL draft and not having a selection until the tail end of the first round. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to get acclimated to what life’s like with Tom Brady. With all 22 starters from the Super Bowl returning, the Bucs find themselves in unfamiliar territory for a club that missed the playoffs 12 consecutive seasons before Brady’s arrival set a new course in March 2020.

Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” won best feature at the 36th Independent Spirit Awards in a ceremony that turned the annual beach soiree into a virtual, largely pre-taped event, and, possibly, an Oscar preview. Zhao also won best director. In one twist, best male lead actor went to Riz Ahmed for his performance in “Sound of Metal” — an award that has usually gone this year to the late Chadwick Boseman for his final performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” “Promising Young Woman” star Carey Mulligan took best lead female actor in the category that’s perhaps most up for grabs at the Academy Awards.

AmEx sees drop in revenue as pandemic slows travel, dining

American Express saw its first-quarter profits rise sharply, but the company saw a significant drop in revenue as fewer customers used their credit cards and those with balances paid down debt. The New York-based company earned $2.24 billion, or $2.74 a share, compared with a profit of $367 million, or 41 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. American Express’ bottom line took a hit in the pandemic, with fewer Americans traveling, dining out, entertaining or shopping. Spending on corporate and individual charge and credit cards has dropped, and those who kept a revolving balance have paid off their debts. Revenues at AmEx were down 12% from a year earlier.

Nonprofits gain funding from unusual source: Marijuana sales

Nonprofits have an unexpected new source of funding: State marijuana sales. Over the past two years, California has used some of the fees it collects from the sale of recreational marijuana to give grants to community organizations that serve people and communities harmed by the war on drugs. So far, the state has awarded nearly $100 million, a figure expected to jump to $175 million in May. The Golden State is not alone. Alaska and Illinois have similar programs, and as more states legalize the drug, additional programs could be on the way.

Sen. Johnson on others getting shots: 'What do you care?'

Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, of Wisconsin, questioned the need for widespread COVID-19 vaccinations, saying in a radio interview “what do you care if your neighbor has one or not?” Johnson, who has no medical expertise or background, made the comments Thursday during an interview with conservative talk radio host Vicki McKenna. Contrary to what medical experts advise, Johnson has said he doesn’t need to be vaccinated because he had COVID-19 in the fall. He went further on Thursday, questioning why anyone would get vaccinated or worry about why others have not. Johnson says he sees “no reason to be pushing vaccines on people."

NY won't say what it told DOJ about nursing home outbreaks

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office won’t reveal what it told the U.S. Justice Department about COVID-19 outbreaks in nursing homes. Federal investigators asked the state last year to turn over basic statistics related to deaths and infections inside nursing homes. Cuomo’s office said it began sending records to federal authorities in the fall. But in response to an open records request from The Associated Press, the governor’s office said it would not share those same documents with the public now. It said doing so would be “an invasion of personal privacy." It also said disclosing the records would “interfere with law enforcement investigations."

The NFL says an additional 45 prospects will participate virtually. That includes likely No. 1 overall selection quarterback Trevor Lawrence of Clemson.

Therapy bunny at SF ballpark brings smiles, is instant hit

It’s just not every day you see a rabbit at a baseball game. A golden-colored therapy bunny named Alex came to the ballpark and stole the hearts of San Francisco Giants fans, attending the series opener against Miami with owners Kei Kato and Josh Row. Sporting a dark bow tie with orange crabs to represent the Giants’ colors, 4 1/2-month-old Alex earned some major screen time in the early innings. The bunny in the stands is believed to be a first in the 22-year history of Oracle Park, according to Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter. Kato lost her brewery restaurant during the coronavirus pandemic and now runs a small café in the U.S. Immigration office. The bunny helps her deal with the anxiety and stress of no longer having her main source of income and fulfillment.

Caitlyn Jenner says she will run for governor of California

Republican Caitlyn Jenner says she will run for governor of California. Jenner says in statement posted Friday on Twitter that she has filed initial paperwork to run. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing a likely recall election this year. Election officials are still reviewing petition signatures required to qualify the recall for the ballot. Several other Republicans have also announced plans to run. The 71-year-old transgender rights activist described herself as economically conservative and socially progressive in a People magazine interview last year. Jenner immediately stands out in an emerging field that so far has failed to attract a nationally known contender.
