US plane joins hunt for Indonesian sub after air runs out

Indonesia has pressed ahead with a search for a navy submarine off Bali, hours after the oxygen supply for 53 crew members aboard is believed to have been exhausted. A U.S. reconnaissance plane and other nations’ vessels are set to join the hunt Saturday. There’s concern the submarine may have sunk too deep to reach or recover in time. It lost contact after its last reported dive Wednesday off the resort island, and the navy chief has said it was expected to run out of oxygen early Saturday morning. The military spokesperson says, “We keep doing the search until we find it and whatever the result." The search is focused on an area where an oil slick was found.

ASEAN leaders to meet Myanmar coup leader amid killings

Southeast Asian leaders are to meet Myanmar’s top general and coup leader in an emergency summit in Indonesia and are expected to press calls for an end to violence by security forces that has left hundreds of protesters dead. There is little hope for an immediate breakthrough in the two-hour gathering in Jakarta between Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. But his decision to face them offers a rare chance for the 10-nation bloc to directly deal with the general who ousted one of its leaders. One proposal includes a trip to Myanmar by the Brunei prime minister to meet the army leadership and representatives of detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Dispute over Russian pipeline tests Biden's Europe outreach

Pressure is growing on President Joe Biden to take action to prevent the completion of a Russian gas pipeline to Europe that many fear will give the Kremlin significant leverage over U.S. partners and allies. Biden has said he opposes the pipeline and has been keen to portray himself as tough on Russian President Vladimir Putin while being a strong supporter of Eastern European countries like Poland and Ukraine that are dead set against it. But he is also torn by ally Germany's advocacy for the project and has put off a decision on new sanctions. With the pipeline almost 95% finished, his hand may soon be forced.

After COVID relief bill, progressives look for next big win

Progressives are looking for their next big win now that the COVID-19 relief bill has been signed into law. Many have declared a Democratic countermeasure to the Georgia election law the No. 1 goal. The Derek Chauvin murder trial has resurrected calls for criminal justice legislation. Some liberals want an immigration overhaul. Others seize on expanding the Supreme Court. This week, the House voted to make the District of Columbia a state. And progressives have their own version of climate and public works spending. It's a reflection that the progressive movement remains scattershot as it tries to turn its growing power into policy achievements.
