What's behind the growth slump? Takeaways from census data

The U.S. Census Bureau has released its first batch of data for its once-every-decade count. It shows the country's population growth slowing to a level not seen since the Great Depression. It also shows the continued migration of the U.S. population to the West and the South. That means states like Colorado, Florida and Texas will gain congressional seats while places like New York and Ohio will lose them. Because Republicans control most of the states gaining seats they could benefit from the redrawing of congressional districts. Still, those states in the West and South had been expected to gain even more seats, raising questions of whether all their Latinos were counted.

In fight against virus, Biden looks for path back to normal

President Joe Biden spent his first 100 days in office encouraging Americans to mask up and stay home to slow the spread of COVID-19. His task for the next 100 days will be to lay out the path back to normal. When Biden entered office, he moved swiftly to overcome vaccine supply issues and more than tripled the country’s ability to administer them. But ending the coronavirus pandemic will require more than putting shots into arms — and that task is growing more difficult as demand sags. The president also needs a robust plan to help the nation emerge from a year of isolation, disruption and confusion.

Report: Pandemic gives rise to antisemitic 'Zoom bombing'

A Jewish civil rights group says antisemites adopted a new, digital form of harassment during the COVID-19 pandemic. A report issued Tuesday by the Anti-Defamation League counted 196 cases of antisemitic "Zoom bombing" attacks in the U.S. last year. The group’s annual report found that intruders disrupting video conferences on Zoom and other platforms offset decreases in antisemitic incidents in more traditional settings, like synagogues, schools and other Jewish institutions. The ADL's overall count of incidents dropped by 4% last year, from a record high of 2,107 in 2019 to 2,024 last year.

Mike Conley scored 26 points and Rudy Gobert added 18 points for Utah. The Jazz, playing their fifth straight game without leading scorer Donovan Mitchell, have lost three of five.

Wheeler takes 1-hitter into 9th as Phillies deck Cards 2-1

Zack Wheeler took a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning and Rhys Hoskins homered twice as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1. Hoskins’ seventh career multi-homer game and second this season helped the Phillies improve to 3-1 against St. Louis. Wheeler struck out nine and edged Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright in a classic pitchers’ duel that took just 2 hours, 22 minutes. Wheeler was lifted after issuing a leadoff walk to Matt Carpenter in the ninth on his 114th pitch. Héctor Neris got the save, but not before Carpenter scored on a groundout by Dylan Carlson. Wainwright tossed a complete game on 107 pitches, allowing six hits and striking out eight.

Indians top Twins 5-3 in 10 innings on Luplow's 2-run homer

Jordan Luplow hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning off Alex Colomé, giving the Cleveland Indians a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins in their series opener. Luplow’s second career walk-off homer was a leadoff shot that cleared the wall in left field, scoring free runner César Hernández. Minnesota fell to 0-5 in extra-inning games. Emmanuel Clase worked one perfect inning for the win, helping Cleveland to its second straight victory. Luplow was the only batter faced by Colomé. The teams have combined to win the last five AL Central titles, with Minnesota the two-time defending champion.

DC police department hit by apparent extortion attack

The Washington, D.C., police department says its computer network has been breached. The department says a Russian-speaking ransomware syndicate claims to have stolen sensitive data, including on informants, and is threatening to share it with local criminal gangs if the department does not pay an unspecified ransom. The cybercriminals posted screenshots on their website supporting their claim to have stolen more than 250 gigabytes of data. The District’s Metropolitan Police Department says it has asked the FBI to investigate the “unauthorized access.” There is no indication that any police operations were affected.

Suns snap Knicks' nine-game win streak with 118-110 victory

Devin Booker scored 33 points and the Phoenix Suns capped a grueling road trip with a 118-110 victory that snapped the New York Knicks’ nine-game winning streak. Chris Paul scored the final seven Phoenix points as the Suns held on to finish 3-2 on their trip that included visits to the top four teams in the Eastern Conference. Beaten a day earlier by Brooklyn, they fell behind by 15 quickly in this one before gaining control in the fourth quarter. Mikal Bridges added 21 points, Paul had 20 and Cameron Johnson hit three 3-pointers in the final period after the game was tied at 87 through three.

'Red Tourism' draws Chinese on centennial of Communist Party

On the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, tourists are flocking to historic sites and making pilgrimages to party landmarks. On a street where the Red Army once roamed, a group of retirees in historic pastel-blue army uniforms belt out tunes made famous through countless movies, television shows and other forms of propaganda. Historic locations in Jiangxi and Guizhou provinces — the sites of revolutionary leader Mao Zedong’s early battles, his escape from Nationalist forces in the Long March and the cementing of his leadership — are experiencing an influx of tourists this year as post-pandemic travel returns to China.

LEADING OFF: D-backs keep pitching amid no-hitter debate

Merrill Kelly starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks when they host Fernando Tatis Jr. and the Padres following a dominant pitching performance in a doubleheader at Atlanta. Madison Bumgarner tossed a seven-inning no-hitter against the Braves on Sunday after Zac Gallen threw a one-hit shutout in the opener. Bumgarner didn’t get credit for a no-hitter in the Major League Baseball record book, igniting a lively debate among fans. An MLB committee in 1991 ruled a no-hitter had to go at least nine innings and the Elias Sports Bureau — the sport’s official statistician — repeated that stance last year when seven-inning doubleheaders began. There currently are no plans by MLB to revisit the decision.

Full of surprises: Royals own best AL record, sweep Tigers

Jarrod Dyson doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 to complete a four-game sweep on the road for the first time in nearly 22 years. The Royals have won a season-high five straight and own the best record in the American League at 14-7. Detroit has the worst record in the majors at 7-16 after losing 10 of 11 games and is off to its worst start since 2003. Brad Keller earned the win after giving up two runs over six innings.

Justice Dept. opens police probe after Breonna Taylor death

Attorney General Merrick Garland says the Justice Department is opening a sweeping probe into policing in Louisville, Kentucky over the March 2020 death of Breonna Taylor, who was shot to death by police during a raid at her home. The 26-year-old Taylor was roused from sleep by police who came through the door using a battering ram. Her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired once. A no-knock warrant was approved as part of a narcotics investigation. No drugs were found at her home. Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, tweeted after the announcement that she “can't wait for the world to see Louisville Police Department for what it really is.”

Mulkey celebrates emotional homecoming at LSU introduction

Hall of Fame coach Kim Mulkey’s introduction at LSU had an overriding theme that echoed constantly under the domed roof of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. It was the word, “home.” Mulkey is a native of Tickfaw, Louisiana. She won state championships at Hammond High School about 45 miles east of Baton Rouge. She also won national titles as both a player and assistant coach at Louisiana Tech before spending 21 years turning Baylor into three-time national title winners. Mulkey says she only would have left Baylor for one job and it was at LSU.

Cop accused of hurting woman's arm: 'Ready for the pop?'

A Colorado police officer accused of dislocating the shoulder of a 73-year-old woman with dementia while arresting her seemed to know he had injured her. According to police surveillance video with audio enhanced that was made public by the woman's lawyer on Monday, the officer tells fellow officers “ready for the pop?” as he watched his body camera footage of when she is against a patrol car with her handcuffed left arm bent up behind her head. One officer asks for the video to be turned off. Another says “I love it.” A lawsuit alleges she was denied medical care for six hours.

Tesla posts $438M 1Q profit on strong electric vehicle sales

Charged up by strong sales of its electric cars and SUVs, Tesla has reported its seventh-straight profitable quarter. The company made $438 million in the three-month period that ended March 31. Its sales more than doubled the same period last year to nearly 185,000 vehicles. Once again, the company needed regulatory credits purchased by other automakers in order to make a profit. Also, a company official said on a conference call that there is evidence that someone was behind the wheel of a Tesla Model S that crashed in Texas, killing two men. Local authorities said they found no one in the driver's seat. They're investigating whether the car was operating on Tesla's Autopilot driver-assist system.

Jeff Bridich steps down as general manager of Rockies

Jeff Bridich is stepping down as general manager of the Colorado Rockies. The mutual agreement between Bridich and the team ends a tenure that included two playoff appearances and a falling out with Nolan Arenado that ultimately led to the All-Star third baseman’s trade. Bridich was in his seventh season as GM. The team will appoint an interim general manager for the rest of the season before launching a search following the postseason. The Rockies also appointed Greg Feasel as the team president in addition to his role of being in charge of the club’s business operations.

Judge tosses lawsuit of man who alleged Jackson molestation

A judge has dismissed the lawsuit of a man who alleged that Michael Jackson sexually abused him as a boy. The Los Angeles judge tossed out the lawsuit of Wade Robson on Monday, saying two Jackson entertainment corporations targeted by the lawsuit had no legal duty to protect Robson from Jackson. Robson made the allegation in the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland.”  His attorney Vince Finaldi said in a statement that the decision sets a dangerous precedent and he plans to appeal. A similar lawsuit from another man in the documentary was dismissed in October.

Kansas City Southern in talks on dueling rail takeover bids

As deal talks begin, Canadian National railroad says it is receiving broad support for its $33.7 billion bid to buy Kansas City Southern. Canadian National said Monday that more than 400 shippers and other stakeholders have submitted letters supporting its offer, including some who previously supported Canadian Pacific’s $25 billion bid to buy Kansas City Southern. That’s similar to the level of support Canadian Pacific says it has received for its offer. On Saturday, Kansas City Southern said it would negotiate with CN about its unsolicited offer because it “could reasonably be expected” to be considered a superior proposal although KCS’ board hasn’t yet determined that it is.

Column: Vaccine the key to getting 135,000 into Indy 500

Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host the largest sporting event in the world since the start of the pandemic next month. The plan calls for 135,000 spectators at the Indianapolis 500. The number seems large but it is only 40% capacity for the largest sports structure in the world. Roger Penske is requiring participants be either vaccinated or undergo daily coronavirus testing. The speedway has run mass vaccination sites and fans will have opportunities to get their shots during the month of May.

Trainer Cox seeks Derby history as Louisville's first winner

He began working with horses at Churchill Downs as a teenager before learning under several trainers and branching out on his own 16 years ago. Cox now has an Eclipse Award along with the likely Kentucky Derby favorite in 5-0 Essential Quality. The colt could make Cox the first Louisville-born Derby winning trainer. That would add to an impressive resume' that includes two Oaks victories for fillies in three years.
