Wandering cops shuffle departments, abusing citizens

One of the biggest roadblocks to police accountability is so-called “wandering cops” who lose their jobs in one place only to be rehired in another. Most states keep the names of disciplined officers secret and the vast majority of departments do not fully investigate the background of an officer they are hiring. Police chiefs, who have found it difficult to rid their departments of problem officers, generally support stronger laws. Police unions oppose them, arguing that past allegations - many of them denied - shouldn’t follow officers through their careers.

NFL draft could see record run of quarterbacks taken

As soon as the San Francisco 49ers traded three first round picks to move up to No. 3 overall, it became clear that quarterbacks would come off the board at a record pace. While QBs are widely expected to go 1-2-3 for just the third time in the common draft era that started in 1967, there are still questions about how many others will follow in the top 10 and first round. Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson are expected to be the top two picks, to the Jaguars and the Jets, with the Niners likely choosing among Mac Jones, Trey Lance and Justin Fields at No. 3. That would match 1971 and 1999 as the only drafts with quarterbacks taken with the top three picks. Four QBs could go in the top four if Atlanta drafts the successor to Matt Ryan or trades down to a quarterback-needy team.

Jarvis is rooting for his streak to be broken. He wants everyone on the ice to stay as healthy as he was able to during his career.

Man United looks to end semifinal heartache against Roma

Manchester United’s players have been nothing if not consistent in the semifinals of major tournaments over the past year and a half. They have played in four and they have lost in four. No. 5 is coming up on Thursday when Roma visits Old Trafford for the first leg of the Europa League semifinals and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reason to believe this time will be different. The United manager says his players are “more experienced and they’ve come through some difficult times.” He also says they have the “motivation of having those disappointments.”

Video shows California man pinned by officers before he dies

Officials in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Alameda have made public nearly an hour of video that shows officers pinning a man to the ground during an arrest that ended in his death. The body camera footage released Tuesday shows officers confronting 26-year-old Mario Gonzalez. He appeared to be drunk in a park on April 19th. The video shows officers pinning him face down for about five minutes, sometimes planting a knee or elbow on his neck or back. Gonzalez stopped breathing and was pronounced dead at a hospital. His family contends Gonzalez was killed by excessive force and that officers escalated a peaceful situation. Three investigations are underway.

A juror who cast one of the unanimous votes to convict a white former Minneapolis police officer of killing George Floyd said most of deliberations was primarily spent trying to convince one person who was uncertain about part of the jury instructions. Brandon Mitchell is the first juror that deliberated in Derek Chauvin’s trial to talk publicly about his experience. He says he felt like deliberations “should have been 20 minutes.” The 31-year-old Mitchell, who is Black, says the one juror was “kind of hung up with a few words in the instructions,” but “wanted to make sure they got it right.” Chauvin was convicted April 20 on all counts: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

India grieves 200K dead, with likely many more uncounted

India’s official death toll has passed 200,000, but the true number is likely far higher. While determining exact numbers in a pandemic is difficult, experts say an overreliance on inadequate data contributed to authorities being blindsided by a massive surge of infections in past weeks. If India had better data, particularly about mortality, it would have been better able to direct efforts to strengthen hospitals and direct vaccines to hotspots, they say. Instead, evidence from mass funerals and the obituary pages in newspapers indicates problems continue in India’s system of recording deaths. But the sheer numbers of infections and deaths are such that the true extent of the pandemic's reach in India is becoming clearer.
