Virginia loses 62-58 to Preston, Ohio, ending title defense

Virginia’s unusual title defense ended with another upset loss in the NCAA Tournament, falling 62-58 to Jason Preston and Ohio. Some familiar problems showed up again for the fourth-seeded Cavaliers, who struggled to score during a key stretch in the second half and shot 35% from the field for the game. Virginia became the first No. 1 seed to drop its opening game in the NCAA Tournament when it lost to UMBC in 2018, but it used the setback as motivation in its run to the championship in 2019. Last year’s NCAA Tournament was canceled because of the pandemic, delaying the Cavaliers’ title defense.

Kispert, Gonzaga roll past Norfolk State 98-55 in NCAAs

Corey Kispert scored 15 of his 23 points by halftime and No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga beat Norfolk State 98-55 on Saturday night to open play in the NCAA Tournament. Anton Watson added 17 points off the bench for the unbeaten Bulldogs. Kispert made 8 of 12 shots and 6 of 9 3-pointers. The Zags shot 55.7% and made 14 of 27 3-pointers against the 16th-seeded Spartans. Devante Carter and Kyonze Chavis each scored 12 points to lead Norfolk State, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions who earned this matchup by beating Appalachian State in the First Four.

Lee becomes 3-time champ on bad knee, Iowa wins team title

Iowa won its first NCAA wrestling team title since 2010, and Hawkeyes star Spencer Lee took his third individual title Saturday night competing on a badly injured knee. Already one of Iowa’s greats, Lee further burnished his image in the state’s wrestling lore when he revealed after his 7-0 victory over Arizona State’s Brandon Courtney that he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in one of his knees eight days earlier. The 125-punder outscored his opponents 59-8 in St. Louis to become the seventh Iowa wrestler, and first since 1998, to win three national titles. His match against Courtney was the only one this season in which he didn’t earn bonus points.

Hoyas history; Colorado uses 3s to dismiss Georgetown 96-73

Chances are, you can fit Colorado’s entire NCAA Tournament history on the back of an old Patrick Ewing jersey. And now Ewing is part of that history, too. The Buffaloes used an early 3-point barrage to parlay their highest seeding ever at March Madness into a first-round win over one of the biggest names in the game — a 96-73 thumping of Georgetown, the program Ewing once starred for and now coaches. Led by freshman Jabari Walker’s 5-for-5 shooting clinic from 3-point range, the fifth-seeded Buffs made 16 3-pointers and shot 64% from long range.

Ayala scores 23 to push No. 10 Maryland past UConn

Eric Ayala scored 23 points and 10th-seeded Maryland moved into the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 63-54 victory over UConn on Saturday night. UConn was held to just 32% shooting to waste a strong night on the boards. The Terrapins were outrebounded by the physical Huskies but used a strong defensive effort to pull off the win. James Bouknight had 15 points and Jalen Gaffney scored 12 for the Huskies, who were back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.  

Dressed down: Alabama rolls over Pitino, Iona 68-55

Herb Jones scored 20 points to help Alabama pull away from Iona and coach Rick Pitino for a 68-55 victory in the NCAA Tournament. Jones had a steal and layup to highlight an 11-0 run to give the second-seeded Crimson Tide breathing room. Pitino was taking his fifth school to the tournament and came in as a 15 seed against the SEC champs. The Gaels stayed close for 30 minutes. Isaiah Ross led them with 19 points. Alabama moves on to face 10th-seeded Maryland in the second round.

No. 5 Creighton beats 12th-seeded UCSB 63-62 with clutch FTs

Christian Bishop made both ends of a one-and-one with 16 seconds left to give fifth-seeded Creighton the lead and the Bluejays hung on to beat 12th-seeded UC Santa Barbara 63-62 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Creighton advanced to face 13th-seeded Ohio in the West Region on Monday. Bishop was fouled by Amadou Sow on the floor after grabbing an offensive rebound and went to the line with the Gauchos up 62-61. The junior came into the game making 57%, but dropped in both barely touching the rim. Creighton continues a turbulent season in which coach Greg McDermott was suspended for racially insensitive language.

Sharp-shooting Iowa gets 24 from Garza to beat Grand Canyon

Iowa got 24 points from Luka Garza to move into the second round of the NCAA Tournament with an 86-74 victory over Grand Canyon. The second-seeded Hawkeyes avoided the early upset that sent high seeds Ohio State, Purdue and Tennessee home on a wild opening first day of the tournament. Iowa shot 54% from the field and went 10 of 22 from behind the arc. Joe Wieskamp added 16 points to help lead the Hawkeyes into the next round They will play Oregon, which advanced after Virginia Commonwealth bowed out of the bracket due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Police contacted after Ohio State's Liddell receives threats

Ohio State officials have reached out to police about threatening and insulting social media messages sophomore E.J. Liddell received following the Buckeyes’ NCAA Tournament loss. Ohio State associate athletic director for communications Dan Wallenberg told The Associated Press he contacted police on Saturday morning about the threats Liddell received after the second-seeded Buckeyes were upset by No. 15 seed Oral Roberts in overtime. Liddell, who had 23 points and 14 rebounds in the game, revealed on his Twitter feed he received threatening messages. He posted images of the messages, including one that said “I hope you die I really do.” Other messages included racist insults.

LeBron James sprains right ankle in loss, out indefinitely

LeBron James left in the second quarter with a high right ankle sprain that the Lakers said will sideline him indefinitely, and Los Angeles went on to fall 99-94 to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. Two hours after the game, the Lakers announced that James is out indefinitely. The defending NBA champions already are without All-NBA big man Anthony Davis, who has missed 14 consecutive games with a right calf injury and won’t play again until April. James was hurt when he rolled his ankle under Solomon Hill, who was called for a foul as he reached awkwardly for a steal. The 36-year-old superstar screamed and fell to the court clutching at his ankle, yet he got up and briefly stayed in the game.

Giants sign WR Kenny Golladay to 4-year, $80 million deal

The New York Giants’ anemic offensive is adding quite possibly the best receiver on the free agent market. The Giants on Saturday signed former Detroit Lions star Kenny Golladay to a four-year contract worth roughly $80 million in the hopes of giving quarterback Daniel Jones a big-threat playmaker. Golladay played in five games because of a hip injury last season. He visited with the Giants for three days before signing a contract Saturday. He has 21 career TD catches. The Giants’ top three receivers last season combined for only seven touchdown catches. 

Hey, Buddy: Coach's kid leads Boeheim, Syracuse vs. Huggins

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim's son is the team's top scorer as it heads into a Midwest Regional matchup against Bob Huggins and West Virginia with a Sweet 16 berth on the line. Buddy Boeheim scored 30 points in the No. 11 seed Orange's first-round victory. The No. 3 seed Mountaineers have their own guy who already poured in 30 in this year's NCAA Tournament, Miles McBride. Boeheim vs. Huggins pits two of only six coaches with at least 900 wins in Division I men's basketball history. Other Midwest matchups Sunday are Illinois against Loyola Chicago, Houston against Rutgers, and Oklahoma State against Oregon State.  

Howard, Michigan roll past Texas Southern in NCAA tourney

Juwan Howard got the win in his first NCAA Tournament game since taking over at Michigan, guiding Mike Smith and the top-seeded Wolverines to an 82-66 victory over Texas Southern. Smith scored 18 points and Hunter Dickinson added 16 as Michigan rolled into the second round without Isaiah Livers, who is out with a foot injury. Eli Brooks and Brandon Johns Jr. had 11 points apiece. Howard is back in the tournament for the first time since his stellar playing career with Michigan, including back-to-back Final Four appearances in 1992 and 1993. It’s his second season in charge, but the NCAA Tournament was canceled last year because of the pandemic.

Jones survives a challenging day, takes 3-shot lead at Honda

Aaron Wise was leading by six shots at one point during the third round of The Honda Classic, looking well on his way to a runaway victory. By day’s end, he wasn’t even in the lead. That distinction goes to Matt Jones, the first-round leader who is now the leader going into the final round as well. Jones grinded out a 1-under 69 on Saturday to get to 10 under for the week. He leads Wise and J.B. Holmes by three shots.

McCormack helps No. 3 seed KU survive E Washington, 93-84

David McCormack had 22 points and nine rebounds in his return from COVID-19 quarantine and helped No. 3 seed Kansas rally from a 10-point second-half hole and beat No. 14 seed Eastern Washington 93-84 in the NCAA Tournament. Ochai Agbaji scored 21 points, Marcus Garrett fought foul trouble to add 20 and Dajuan Harris Jr. had 13 as Kansas advanced to play sixth-seeded Southern California or No. 11 seed Drake for a spot in the Sweet 16. Tanner Groves scored a career-high 35 points and younger brother Jacob Groves had 23 for the Eagles.

Man City into FA Cup semifinals, keeps quadruple dream alive

Manchester City’s bid for an unprecedented quadruple of major trophies is still alive. Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne scored late goals in a 2-0 win over Everton in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s players are sweeping all before them this season. City leads the Premier League by 14 points. It has reached the final of the English League Cup and the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Southampton was already through to the last four as Nathan Redmond scored twice and set up another goal in a 3-0 win over fellow south-coast club Bournemouth.

Man arrested after taking daughter into zoo elephant habitat

A father has been arrested on suspicion of child endangerment after he carried his 2-year-old daughter into the elephant habitat at the San Diego Zoo to take a photograph with the animals. Zoo officials said the man bypassed multiple barriers and “purposely and illegally trespassed” into a habitat for Asian and African elephants Friday afternoon. Witnesses said the elephant came within seconds of making contact with the two. The elephant was not harmed, and the man was able to get his daughter out of the habitat safely. The father, 25-year-old Jose Manuel Navarrete, is being held in jail on $100,000 bail. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer who would speak on his behalf. 

LeBron James leaves court with right ankle injury vs Hawks

LeBron James has left the court in visible frustration after injuring his right ankle during the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Atlanta Hawks. James left early in the second quarter Saturday. The 17-time All-Star got hurt when he rolled his right ankle and then made awkward contact on the perimeter with defender Solomon Hill. He fell to the court and screamed, briefly rolling around in obvious pain. James got up shortly afterward and initially walked it off during a timeout, but he called a timeout and took himself out of the game moments later. The team announced he would not return.

Florida State cold from deep, outlasts UNCG in NCAA tourney

RaiQuan Gray scored 17 points and No. 4 seed Florida State began what it hopes is another deep NCAA Tournament run under coach Leonard Hamilton, holding off 13th-seeded UNC Greensboro 64-54 in the East Region. The Seminoles reached the Elite Eight and the Sweet 16 in the previous two tournaments. They allowed the Spartans to hang around deep into the second half thanks to an uneven offensive performance. Florida State went 0 for 9 from 3-point range, winning a game without a made 3 for the first time since February 2018. Isaiah Miller scored 17 points and Keyshaun Langley added 16 for Greensboro. 

Hundreds in Atlanta rally against hate after spa shootings

Hundreds of people have gathered in a park across from the Georgia state Capitol in Atlanta to demand justice for the victims of shootings at massage businesses days earlier. The diverse crowd gathered Saturday called for end to racism, xenophobia and misogyny. The hundreds of people gathered in Liberty Plaza waved signs and cheered for speakers, including U.S. Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff and Georgia state Rep. Bee Nguyen, the first Vietnamese American to serve in the Georgia House. Robert Aaron Long, a 21-year-old white man, is accused of killing eight people at three Atlanta-area massage businesses Tuesday.

Republic of Congo candidate hospitalized with COVID-19

Relatives say the leading opposition presidential candidate in Republic of Congo is receiving oxygen at a private hospital after being diagnosed with COVID-19. The announcement late Saturday comes on the eve of the presidential election in which Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas is widely considered the strongest opposition candidate facing longtime President Denis Sassou N'Guesso. The 61-year-old Kolelas had skipped his final campaign event on Friday after telling some reporters a day earlier that he feared he had malaria. A video circulating on social media showed Kolelas wearing an oxygen mask and with a blood pressure cuff on his arm as he lay in a hospital bed.

Draft prospect Jack Leiter throws no-hitter, Ks 16 for Vandy

Top draft prospect Jack Leiter pitched a nine-inning no-hitter with 16 strikeouts for Vanderbilt, retiring his final 27 batters. Leiter, the son of 19-year big league pitcher Al Leiter, walked Braylen Wimmer to lead off the game but was perfect the rest of the way in a 5-0 victory over South Carolina. He struck out Wimmer swinging at a 96 mph fastball to end the game, his 124th pitch. The 20-year-old sophomore was swarmed by teammates after the final pitch. The right-hander improved to 5-0 with a 0.31 ERA in five starts.
