Not rusty: Oregon soars past Iowa 95-80 into Sweet 16

Chris Duarte scored 23 points and Oregon showed no signs of rust in beating No. 2 seed Iowa 95-80 to reach the Sweet 16 after a long layoff. The seventh-seeded Ducks had advanced to the West Region’s second round without playing a game because first-round opponent Virginia Commonwealth had multiple positive COVID-19 tests. That left the Ducks with a nine-day break since losing in the Pac-12 Tournament title game. Oregon’s offense hummed like it was fresh off the line once the ball went up. It kicked off the NCAA Tournament’s first Monday of second-round games with a masterpiece. Two-time All-American Luka Garza capped his stellar college career by tying the Iowa NCAA Tournament record with 36 points.

High court won't hear fishermen case against ocean monument

The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from a fishing group that challenged the creation of a large federally protected area in the Atlantic Ocean. The group sued to try to get rid of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, which became the first national ocean monument in the Atlantic when President Barack Obama created it in 2016. The fishermen sued in federal court saying the establishment of a protected zone where they have historically fished for lobsters and crabs could hurt their livelihoods. The high court declined to consider the suit on Monday.

Detroit to host event to create path for Black golfers

The Rocket Mortgage Classic emphasized diversity and inclusion when it became part of the PGA Tour schedule two years ago. That turned out to be just the start. Next up for Detroit's PGA Tour stop is a four-day event called “The John Shippen.” The idea is to create opportunities for Black golfers. That includes a 36-hole event at Detroit Golf Club ahead of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The top male gets into the PGA Tour event. The winning two-women team gets a spot in the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational on the LPGA Tour. There's also a two-day business summit.

Mysterious new system at border keeps migrants guessing

The fate of thousands of migrant families who have recently arrived at the Mexico border is being decided by a mysterious new system under President Joe Biden. U.S. authorities are releasing migrants with “acute vulnerabilities” and allowing them to pursue asylum. But it's not clear why some are considered vulnerable and not others. Some families that apparently don't meet the criteria are being expelled under pandemic-related powers that deny them an opportunity to seek humanitarian protection. The mystery keeps migrants guessing. Many believe the key factor is the presence of young children. The criteria to be allowed into the U.S. are a closely held secret.

Irving to miss Nets' road trip to tend to family matter

Kyrie Irving will miss the Brooklyn Nets’ three-game road trip this week while dealing with a family matter. The Nets said Monday that Irving wouldn't accompany the team for games Tuesday at Portland, Wednesday at Utah or Friday at Detroit. Brooklyn has already been playing without fellow All-Star Kevin Durant because of a strained left hamstring but has won 15 of its last 17 games. Irving missed seven games in January after leaving the team for personal reasons. He didn’t specify the reason for that absence, though did say there was “family and personal stuff” going on.

Lawyers battle over 'race-norming' in NFL dementia tests

The class counsel for thousands of retired players suing the NFL pledged Monday to try to remove race as a factor in dementia testing. But lawyers for Black players demanded he release the data on payouts by race in the $1 billion concussion settlement. They argue that Black men are being denied awards that average more than $500,000 because of testing methods that assume Black people have lower cognitive function than white people. That makes it harder to show they’ve suffered neurological damage linked to NFL concussions. Black players make up the majority of the 20,000-member class of retired players.
