US officials in Mideast to reassure jittery allies over Iran

Top Biden administration officials and U.S. senators have crisscrossed the Middle East, seeking to assuage growing unease among key Gulf Arab partners over America’s rapprochement with Iran and other policy shifts. The trips come as the U.S. and Iran, through intermediaries in Vienna, discuss a return to Tehran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers that former President Donald Trump abandoned. Delaware Democratic Sen. Chris Coons told reporters in Abu Dhabi on Monday that he aimed to allay the sheikhdom's concerns about the return to the landmark deal and create broader engagement with Gulf partners.

US begins reuniting some families separated at Mexico border

The Biden administration says four families that were separated at the Mexico border during Donald Trump’s presidency will be reunited in the United States this week. The families represent what Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calls “just the beginning” of a broader effort. Two of the four families include mothers who were separated from their children in late 2017, one Honduran and another Mexican. Exactly how many families will reunite in the United States and in what order is linked to negotiations with the American Civil Liberties Union to settle a lawsuit. But Mayorkas says there are more to come.

AP-NORC poll: Government should help Americans age at home

A majority of Americans agree that government should help people age in their own homes, not institutional settings. And there’s a surprising level of bipartisan agreement on some proposals that could help make that happen. That's according to a new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Still, Republicans lag Democrats in support of some policies, including the most far-reaching idea. Only 42% of Republicans favor a government long-term care insurance program for all Americans, compared with 78% of Democrats. Overall, 60% of the public supports that approach.

Devastating virus surge spreads impact into India's politics

India has recorded another 368,147 coronavirus infections and 3,400 deaths as a catastrophic surge ripples through the country. The update comes as political opposition parties and a New Delhi court push for more oxygen to be delivered to hospitals crippled by the latest surge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party was resoundingly defeated in state elections over the weekend as his government faces criticism it left the health system unprepared for the surge and held massive rallies that may have spread the virus. India has confirmed 19.9 million infections, and more than 218,000 people have died.

LEADING OFF: Luzardo hurt playing video game, Ohtani OK?

Athletics left-hander Jesús Luzardo will be off the mound for a while. He might also be staying away from video games. Luzardo is out indefinitely after breaking the pinkie finger on his pitching hand when he thumped a table while playing a video game. The injury occurred before his start Saturday. An X-ray after a loss to Baltimore showed a hairline fracture and Luzardo was put on the 10-day injured list. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said he didn’t know how long Luzardo would be out. Luzardo wound up pitching three innings and allowed six runs. He is 1-3 with a 5.79 ERA in six starts this season.

Royals love to run -- and they've raced to MLB's top mark

The Kansas City Royals have the best record in baseball — and an identity that should be pretty familiar by now. The Royals are still trying to beat teams on the basepaths. Whit Merrifield already has eight stolen bases, tied for the major league lead. As a team, Kansas City has 22 steals. Only San Diego has more. That’s despite the fact that Adalberto Mondesi, last year’s major league leader in steals, hasn’t played for the Royals in 2021 because of an oblique injury.

Kyle Lowry had 37 points and 11 assists, Pascal Siakam had 39 points and 13 rebounds and the short-handed Toronto Raptors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 121-114. LeBron James had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists before going back to the locker room with 6:42 to play. It was the second game back for James after missing 20 because of a sprained right ankle. Toronto ended a three-game losing streak despite not having Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Chris Boucher or Gary Trent Jr. available because of injuries or to rest after losing at Utah on Saturday. Kyle Kuzma had 24 points for Los Angeles.

EXPLAINER: COVID-19, far-right are top themes in Madrid vote

Residents in Madrid, one of Europe’s worst-hit regions in the pandemic, are voting Tuesday for a new regional assembly in an election that tests people's resistance to lockdown measures. The early election was called by a conservative regional chief who is trying to cling to power after her center-right coalition crumbled. Isabel Díaz Ayuso has made a name for herself by resisting the strictest measures against the virus and criticizing the national government’s handling of the pandemic.By keeping Madrid’s bars, restaurants, museums and concert halls open, Díaz Ayuso has invigorated support for her conservative Popular Party. She has also made inroads among voters seduced by the patriotic populism of Vox, a far-right party.

Russia lags behind others in its COVID-19 vaccination drive

Russia boasted last year of being the first country to authorize a coronavirus vaccine. But almost five months into its immunization campaign, Russia is lagging behind many nations in getting its population vaccinated. Through April 27, only about 12.1 million people have gotten at least one shot and only 7.7 million, or 5%, have been fully vaccinated. That puts Russia far behind the U.S., where 43% have gotten at least one shot, and the European Union with nearly 27%. The numbers cast doubt on whether Russia can achieve its ambitious goal of vaccinating more than 30 million people by mid-June and 69 million by August.

Pollock 8 RBIs, Beaty 7 RBIs, each slam as Dodgers bop Brews

A.J. Pollock drove in eight runs and Matt Beaty drove in seven, with both players hitting early grand slams in a startling power show that sent the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Milwaukee Brewers 16-4. Pollock homered twice and doubled while Beaty went 4 of 6 and scored three times. Their slams came against Alec Bettinger, who gave up 11 runs in his big league debut. This was the first time in franchise history the Dodgers had two players with at least seven RBIs in the same game. The last time it happened for any MLB team was in 2007 when Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez did it for Texas.

Also-ran Kings beat contending Mavs 111-99 to finish sweep

Buddy Hield scored 27 points, Marvin Bagley III had 23 points and nine rebounds and Sacramento beat Dallas 111-99, giving the also-ran Kings a season sweep of the playoff-contending Mavericks. All three games were in a span of 15 days. The Mavericks finished the stretch 6-0 against the other teams while going 0-3 for the second time in three seasons against the Kings. Luka Doncic scored 30 points before getting ejected in the final minute after his second technical foul. Doncic is one technical away from a one-game suspension.

Russia, facing lags, turns to China to produce Sputnik shots

Russia is turning to multiple Chinese firms to manufacture the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in an effort to speed up production as demand soars. The arrangements could mean quicker access to a vaccine for countries in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa that have ordered Russia’s shots. Russia has announced three deals totaling 260 million doses with Chinese vaccine companies in recent weeks. While China has delivered hundreds of millions of doses around the world, Russia has only delivered a fraction. Chinese vaccine makers have yet to start manufacturing Sputnik V, but their distribution of hundreds of millions of doses of Chinese vaccines has proven they can produce in volume.

Alonso, Mets top Phillies 8-7 after replay reversal

Pete Alonso capped New York’s six-run eighth inning with a three-run double, and the Mets used a defensive meltdown by Philadelphia and a replay reversal to beat the Phillies 8-7. Michael Conforto snapped a tie with a bases-loaded walk against José Alvarado, driving in Jose Peraza, and Alonso followed with a liner off David Hale that split the gap in right-center and went all the way to the wall for an 8-4 lead. It looked as if Rhys Hoskins hit a tying three-run shot for Philadelphia in the ninth, but the homer was overturned by a replay review. Jeurys Familia then struck out Bryce Harper for the final out.

Mourners will gather on Monday for the funeral of Andrew Brown Jr., a Black man shot and killed by deputies in North Carolina. The invite-only service at noon in a church in Elizabeth City follows public viewings held Sunday. The Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver the eulogy, and other speakers will include civil rights attorney Ben Crump and the Rev. William Barber II who leads the Poor People’s campaign. The 42-year-old Brown was shot and killed on April 21 by deputies attempting to serve drug-related search and arrest warrants, sparking days of protests in the city in rural northeastern North Carolina.
