Death draws attention to police putting suspects face down

It’s common practice for police around the U.S. to place combative suspects face down and press down on their backs with hands, elbows or knees to gain control. They aren’t supposed to do it for an “extended period” because that can lead to injuries or death. The technique is in the spotlight after police video released last week showed officers in Northern California struggling with a man for more than five minutes as he lay face down. A California lawmaker who is a former police officer is trying to outlaw methods that can induce what's known as positional asphyxia. Police say the proposed ban is either too vague or unnecessary.

Over Thomas dissent, high court rejects West Point case

The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from a woman who says she was raped as a West Point cadet. Justice Clarence Thomas alone argued that the court should have heard her case. The woman attended the U. S. Military Academy from 2008 to 2010. She had sued arguing the academy’s leadership tolerated a culture that was hostile toward women and failed to provide adequate support for cadets who are assaulted, among other things. But lower courts said her lawsuit against the U.S. government couldn’t go forward. Thomas said in a dissent that the high court should have taken the case to reconsider a 70-year-old precedent that prevents members of the military from suing the United States when they are injured while doing their duties.

With COVID-19 restrictions limiting how many people can gamble inside, and revenue and profits plunging, this might not sound like the best time for Atlantic City's casinos to be spending big on renovations. Clean megaprojects divide surprise group: environmentalists

America’s patchwork of environmental and conservation groups have disparate opinions about large-scale renewable energy projects that could rise during President Joe Biden's tenure. The groups all agree about the need to reduce U.S. fossil fuel use to fight climate change. But there are deep disputes about the wisdom of projects that will have their own impact on the environment. Some argue that projects like the planned Vineyard Wind offshore wind project off New England will kill birds. Other projects, such as the Champlain Hudson Power Express clean power cable in New York, have generated complaints from environmentalists about ecosystem loss. Elsewhere projects have sparked debate about whether they are simply too big.

Former President Donald Trump will find out this week whether he gets to return to Facebook. The social network’s quasi-independent Oversight Board says it will announce its decision Wednesday on a case concerning the former president's account. Trump’s account was suspended for inciting violence that led to the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riots. After years of treating Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric with a light touch, Facebook and Instagram took the drastic step of silencing his accounts on Jan. 7, saying at the time he’d be suspended “at least” through the end of his presidency.

Man United violence the peak of toxic fan-owner relationship

The storming of Old Trafford crystalized 16 years of disconnect between Manchester United fans and its distant ownership. Choosing not to engage with supporters, the Glazers can’t have avoided seeing the levels of rage against them on Sunday. Not when it led to the unprecedented postponement of a Premier League game due to fan unrest. Three months after celebrating success in the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was the Glazer family’s ill-fated bid to lead United into a European Super League that made their relationship with fans in England more toxic than ever before.
