Engines roar again this weekend at Virginia International Raceway (copy)
A road racing course in Southside Virginia is gearing up to welcome fans to one of its top annual spectator events this weekend.
Virginia International Raceway — this year celebrating its 25th anniversary “reborn” — is hosting the GT World Challenge Powered by AWS from Thursday through Sunday.
It’s expected to bring thousands of visitors to the venue that’s nestled in the Alton area of Halifax County.
Danville often receives an influx of travelers for big race weekends at VIR with fans staying at hotels and eating at area restaurants. That amounts to tourism dollars rolling into the city’s coffers.
This weekend, professional drivers of more than 100 iconic vehicles from around the world will race the winding course with its rolling hills.
This marks the halfway point of the season for the global racing championship for the modified cars that’s organized by SRO Motorsports Group. This season features sprint and endurance races in place like Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.
“VIR’s Summer of Racing isn’t just a season — it’s a celebration of speed, community, and 25 years of unforgettable motorsports moments,” Connie Nyholm, VIR co-owner and CEO, said in a statement earlier this season. “This summer is a tribute to the fans, drivers and teams who’ve helped shape VIR into a world-renowned destination.”
The event will showcase some of the top teams and drivers in the nation, a news release stated. Events include 12 races over the weekend, two autograph sessions Saturday and an open grid walk Sunday.
“At Virginia International Raceway, fans can experience an open paddock and grid walk, driver autograph sessions, car corral upgrades with included hospitality, extensive onsite camping and RV accommodations, family-friendly attractions, kids activities, on-site dining and entertainment, karting and VIR’s scenic 1,300-acre historic property,” the release stated.
Two other events are coming up next month. From Aug. 1-3, the 190 mph MotoAmerica Superbikes will return. Then from Aug. 22-24, IMSA Michelin GT Challenge will be back at VIR, showcasing the world’s top sports car drivers and manufacturers.
