The 20-point comeback in the fourth quarter is the largest fourth-quarter rally to win against an AP No. 1 team, according to Sportradar. The Buckeyes had appeared in complete control after a dominant three quarters that built a 23-3 lead. But Texas rallied behind quarterback Arch Manning, whose touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo early in the fourth started the comeback. The Wolverines were the butt of jokes all week after a lucky break put a second on the clock and gave Underwood another chance to complete a game-winning Hail Mary against Western Michigan last weekend. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caden Buhr made a 42-yard field goal with 15 seconds left to give No. 21 Iowa a 16-13 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night. The game ended with a timing question after the Cyclones got the ball to their own 49 after Jaylen Raynor threw a 24-yard pass to Carter Pabst. It appeared time ran out after Pabst had been tackled inbounds, but a replay review showed there was one second left. Iowa State, though, was out of timeouts, and by rule there would not have been enough time to get off a snap once the ball was set.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jayden Maiava threw two of his five touchdown passes to freshman tight end Mark Bowman, freshman receiver Trent Mosley caught a touchdown pass and scored on a punt return, and No. 14 Southern California beat Louisiana 49-30 on Saturday night. The Trojans (3-0) concluded their cupcake nonconference by amassing 494 yards, with Maiava completing 19 of 29 passes for 261 yards with an interception. PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Wayne Knight scored three touchdowns after a scoreless first half, leading UCLA to a 28-10 victory over San Diego State in the Bruins’ home opener under new coach Bob Chesney. Knight scored on runs of 8 yards in the third quarter and 7 yards and 36 yards in the fourth. Jalvian Thomas added a 1-yard score in the final minutes for the Bruins, who are 2-0. The Aztecs got a 19-yard TD score from Jackson Ford with 2:28 left in the game after Cooper Dileva’s 46-yard field goal earlier in the fourth. UCLA fans came out in greater numbers to the Rose Bowl, eager to see the buzz generated by Chesney’s hire from James Madison.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Anthony Colandrea threw for a career-high four touchdowns, all in the first half, and Nebraska made fast work of Bowling Green in a 56-7 victory. The Cornhuskers beat an opponent from the Mid-American Conference for the second week in a row. They opened the season with a 49-21 win over Ohio. Jacory Barney and Kwazi Gilmer caught two touchdown passes apiece as the Huskers got out to a 35-0 lead at halftime. Colandrea completed 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards before TJ Lateef relieved him in the middle of the fourth quarter.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kamario Taylor passed for 227 yards and three first-half touchdowns to lead Mississippi State in a 38-13 takedown of Minnesota in the first-ever football game between the two schools. Fluff Bothwell rushed for 113 yards and two scores and Anthony Evans III had seven receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs averaged 7 yards per play and put on another offensive clinic. They beat Louisiana-Monroe 62-13 in their season opener. Taylor completed 16 of 22 passes and ran 13 times for 86 yards for good measure to keep the Gophers struggling to keep up all afternoon.
