Plan To Rename I-77 Exit 30 After Steph Curry Hits Roadblock in Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – There was debate at Davidson’s Town Commission meeting on Tuesday night over efforts to rename the interchange at I-77 exit 30 after NBA superstar Steph Curry.

Despite all the love in the community for the Davidson College alum, the change might not happen.

NCDOT says it will only make the name change if there is unanimous support from town leaders.

One commissioner voted “no” on a resolution supporting the change on Tuesday night, meaning the plan might not move forward.

At previous meetings, some neighbors had spoken out about the change.

Historians say when the interchange was built in the 1960’s, the area changed, pushing out many African-American families.

All these years later, those who grew up along Griffith Street say they’re still hurt by what happened.

And some say they worry renaming the interchange after Curry would take away from efforts to honor the previous community’s legacy.
